slightly confused about the resident permit

Post by mumboman » Tue Jun 21, 2005 8:54 am

I've spent about 5 hours on the phone with the Finnish consulate in Canada discussing work permits and resident permits. Apparently they have no idea what they are doing. They actually told me they never deal with them only student visas. Does anyone know the exact process, so I can explain it to them. I have a contract with a company in Finland. The company has always only dealt with Russian employees so they are a bit confused also and apparently the Russian just came to Finland and applied for the permit while they were there working. Today I was told it was up to the company to go to the employment office in Finland and I didn't have to fill out any forms. This can't be right. At least from what I see on the website. So I've forwarded the info and the forms I'm sure that I need to fill out to the company, who I'm assuming will send somebody to the employment office for 3 days and then email me back and tell me to apply thru the consulate office. I'd go visit the office but it's 2000km away. So if anyone has any suggestions or can help let me know. It's good to see the finnish gov't works much the same as the canadian one. Lots of employees with know one really knowing how to do anything. Unless of course you owe them money, then they know what's going on.

Yes, you are 1:1 as a "Russian" for what it comes to the process. And yes you cannot apply for a work permit on your own. It is the employer who applies for it (the opinion from the employment office). Then with that opinion you apply for a residence permit from the consulate. Basically its all there in plain text at the http://www.uvi.fi website.

I can understand why the embassy is baffled. Usually Finns go to Canada to work and not the opposite.

Thanks Hank I think we are well on our way to sorting it out, Apparently I may be able to work in Finland for up to 3 months without the permit as I am probably classified as an expert and will be working under invitation in my field. So I guess that's how the Russian got there and applied for the permit.

Ah, yes, expert clause. It depends a whole lot on what profession you're in, and how well the company is in concert with the local labour office how fast the subsequent permits go through - also where in the country you are, but it seems atleast the labour office isn't sitting on their paperwork...

Apparently the work permit has been basically approved I just need to fax degrees, From this point how long does it take to have a residence permit approved. My employer said 4-5 weeks though I find this hard to beleive. I have an appt. with the consulate office in 2 days to fill out the neccessary paperwork for the residents permit. I'm just wondering if I should book the flight or wait until the gov't does it's thing.

It can't take that long, thats slower than the canadain gov't(unless of course you owe them tax money they are quite fast then) Would this time be shortened if the employer has some connections within the office of whoever is doing the residents permit.

Connections? ...ah, thats 2 years with parole after 1/3 on good conduct.

It says 6 months is the average process time for residence permit applications on the UVI website. Some people have gotten theirs faster. It depends on... phases of the moon and somesuch...

The company can and should expedite the process by doing it from their side, and asking for faster processing.

Until you have your passport back in hand with the sticker there's no need to get overly anxious. Just get everything ready "to go" when you get it, but don't expect a date.
