Take a look at the Asuntomessut website. The housing fair is taking place in Topila

DON'T GO THERE!

Apologies if I am offending anyone but I used to live there...granted it's cheap and it's by the ocean but it is a dump. It is noisy, rough and generally not a very good area unless you are desperate. The police are called out just about everynight, the same goes for the fire brigade to put all the car fires out. Also it is full of Gipsys selling stuff from the boot of their car at 3am! It has a problem with drugs, drinking and violence.

Sorry but that's how it is!

Toppila isn't really that close to the uni/polytechnic anyway.

I think Tuira is nice and it's right by Hietasarri/Park Ainola and the Dam. Also close to the city centre, don't know what the prices are like though.

Talvikangas, although 6 km from city centre is lovely, cheap too. It is served by many buses, has shops and all the usual stuff. It is easily biked into the centre as well. It is surounded by forests etc and feels quite rural alhough it isn't.

Letting agents worth a try are "Satos" and "Sivakkas". Sivakkas has a web site in English if you need it.

Does anyone know about mylltulli?? also in which suburbs are there new or recent developments. we dont really fancy an old appartment, in my experience these are not the nicest, would prefer something less than 15 years old. again, cheap is the question so compromise must be considered.

Many students live in Syynimaa or right at the university in Linnanmaa, both of which are nice. Höyhtyä also houses a lot of students, and it's ok, but not so close to the uni. Tuira is also good.

The comments about Toppila are accurate- don't go there. Also avoid Kaukovainio and Heinäpää- both dumps.

Hi,

There are lots of new and renovated apartments in Myllytulli/Kasarmi. The area is quite nice, close to the centre but not handy for the university.

Another popular area for university students is Kaijonharju as it's basically next door to the uni. It has quite a good small shopping centre including a pharmacy. There are two new supermarkets in Linnanmaa within walking/cycling distance of Linnanmaa.

There's also Puolvälinkangas which has many apartments, quite old though. It's closer to the city centre and within easy reach of the uni (walking/cycling).

I'd recommend somewhere north of the centre as it'll be much easier to get to the uni. So either Kaijonharju, Linnanmaa, Puolivälinkangas.

-Julie.

Just a little reminder "by the sea" is going to be between "cold" "damn cold" and "what the ***** am I doing here" waiting for the bus the 11 months that are not summer.

The wind is bad enough in helsinki sometimes.

BTW try to get upwind of the paper mills

some pics: http://tilhi.com/photostories/oulu/

Naturally, if the cemetary gives you the creeps, it's not the place to be. Nuthouse strikes out Peltola too (actually I've been living in Peltola for a couple of years, quite close to the mental hospital.. haven't caught me yet!). The cemetary is behind a small hill, looking from Intiö, prison is a small one, with flats very close by (not Intiö area actually)..

Anyway, it's one of the 'good' new places 1-2km from city centre, new buildings and some open spaces with green stuff etc. One of the best places in Oulu IMO, especially if you want a new place to live in. Peltola is on the other side of the highway, so same surroundings apply pretty much.

ps. http://pohjois-suomi.safa.fi/sights/oui.html (some selected pics, mainly ones with architectural value, so misses a lot of normal stuff)
and http://www.ncc.fi/asunnot/pohjoissuomi/ ... inkartano/ (what kind of they're building / have built in Intiö)
and http://amarquot.free.fr/fromOulu2004fr/ ... eltola.jpg (Peltola, there are also older buildings on the edge of Peltola)
