Post by lionel » Wed Jun 29, 2005 5:30 pm

Does anyone have any english fantasy or sci-fi books for sale as ordering used ones off amazon gets ridiculous after adding all the extra charges usually it works out the same as brand new.

There are antikkivariatti bookstores that specialize in those books. Are you in the Helsinki area?

I also recommend going to a) the yearly book fair at the messutkeskus, the sci fi fantasy con (FinnCon), and Rope Con and buying them from dealers/private sellers. The dealers have boxes and boxes of sci fi, usually going for half the cover price.

If you get desperate for a series, we probably have it. You can borrow it, but be advised that my husband married me for my sci fi collection. So if you didn't return it within a few weeks, he'd hunt you down and do terrible things to you :)

lionel, are you ordering from amazon.uk? it's somewhat reasonable to order books there. and honestly, even from amazon.com if you have a way to get someone to ship things for you from the US, it should be pretty cheap -- the US postal service is about 1/3 the price of Finnish posti. There's a $5 international bag/envelope and a $10 bag (both sizeable) that they allow you to fill with whatever you want as long as it's below about 2-3 kilos. Enough for several paperbacks.

The same shipment from Finland to the US would be at least twice to three times the price.

try http://www.play.com They have free delivery within the EU.

I usually scour the secondhand stores but Sci-Fi in any country is popular and the books have a high turn over in some stores. The sci fi store in Sweden is good and there is the one in the Kaisaniemi metro station.

There's a little used bookstore on Frederikinkatu next to the Kamppi center that has a largish selection of Sci Fi (& other genre) books in english.

Forgot the name though...

I second that - they are one of three bookstores in Helsinki known for their sci fi selection (and willingness to buy sci fi).

The used book store in Itakeskus (located in the bridge that crosses the Keha 1) also has a good selection.

Isn't that bridge crossing Itäväylä?

I take it you know that the top floor of the library at 'Rikhardinkatu 3 helsinki' is devoted solely to books in english, there you will find sci-fi, crime, novels and uncle tom cobley and all.

Yes I knew but we live near Iisalmi so I have to try and think of an excuse to come down to Helsinki. Dont think the wife would approve of a 6 hour trip just to go to a bookshop or the library.

Sci-fi books

Post by joekwarnes » Wed Jul 13, 2005 10:08 pm

The Helsinki public library (all branches; Espoo and Vantaa too) has a fairly good assortment, particularly the Kallio branch. All books can be requested online to be sent to your closest branch. Check out the collection of Mammoth Book of Sci-Fi.
Looking to play tennis in the Helsinki area once or twice per week. Speak English and a little Finnish. I am an intermediate player; I've been playing for about 20 years. I live in Alppila but am willing to play in any area in Helsinki.
