Moving to Helsinki- does anyone have half empty van?

Post by conradj » Wed Jul 13, 2005 3:17 am

Hi,

We're moving to Finland from the UK this month. Because the quotes from the shipping companies were a bit excessive (from 800-1900 UK pounds for 3 cubic metres, self packed, no furniture), we're looking for alternative ways to move our possessions. If anyone is returning to Helsinki with a half empty van, please let us know.

If there aren't any alternatives we'll probably use Ship It, which will cost us 800 pounds, and we have to get the stuff to Bristol too. We're waiting for a reply from Puljula as they haven't given us a quote yet.

Any help at all would be much appreciated.

Kiitoksia Paljon,
Conrad[/img]

Have you tried DFDS Transport ? Not sure what their non contract rates are but our contract rates were a shade under 300 quid UK/Finland with taxes, surcharges etc but excluding insurance (insurance is extra, prob 30 quid don't remember the exact stuff as we don't always use DFDS Insurance). That is door to door by road/sea

Using the search, I was able to find lots of decent information, including this:

Thanks Luoto, much appreciated. I'll call Muuttopalvelu M Kahari in the morning. Sadly DFDS said they don't do this sort of thing- maybe they would if it were being paid for by my employer, or if the amount was larger.

If anyone else is in the same situation, these are some of the other companies I've tried already, and what they said-

J Puljula- still waiting for their legendarily slow response to my mail (I'll ring them tomorrow).

AngloPacific- approx 820 pounds and you have to use their boxes (we're already packed).

Ship It- 887.50 if we deliver to their Bristol depot.

Excess Baggage European Removals- 1900! I questioned this price and they told me that they 'couldn't match' the other prices, and that moving to Finland was 'expensive'. Really?

Schenker Limited 'wouldn't normally do this sort of work' so couldn't offer me a competitive price.

Mot of the above are companies I found out about through Finland Forum and Finn Guild. I hope people find this useful.

Thanks,
Conrad

I guess DFDS don't want to make a one off invoice charge for you. Where are you in the UK ? Could discuss internally if we could third party ship for you (it isn't our business!) and invoice you in the UK but there will be VAT on top (think I forgot the VAT earlier). If interested, send me a PM with a normal email address and we can see if this is doable.
