infertility treatment in Finland??

Post by aunnyq » Fri Jul 22, 2005 1:36 am

My husband is considering taking a job in Helsinki, we are coming from the U.S and I am currently undergoing infertility treament. How available is treatment for infertility in Finland? We are looking at FSH injections and ivf here in the states which is many thousands of dollars each month, is any of this covered by the public health system or would it all be put of pocket in the private health system??

Having children is very important to me. I am very concerned about having to give up our house, jobs and and most of our worldly possessions to come to Finland...I dont want to have to give up my dreams of motherhood too.

Any information on infertility in finland?
thank you,
Andrea

Well, the first thing to know is that you'd be put in a queue when you ask such treatment to the public-health hospitals.

The queue for injections is not so long, but it's roughly 6 month for ivf.

I don't know about the prices of ivf, but it should not be thousands of euros, even though I heard it was expensive... A good thing happening now, is that the queue is so long for public-health that the public-health could send you to a private-clinic, and you would pay as if it was public-health. In the injection treatment, I know that you have to pay for the hormones. Something like 100€ per treatment, if I recall well.

For info, contact Väestöliitto (http://www.vaestoliitto.fi). They have a few infertility clinics mainly in the bigger cities (in Helsinki it's at Fredrikinkatu 47, 4th floor). They are basically non-profit, apparently do not care what nationality you are, and mention on their pages that their fees are "reasonable" (not free though).
Tel: +358 9 616 221
Email: infertility.clinic@vaestoliitto.fi

In the public health sector, infertility treatments are provided by the HUS (http://www.hus.fi) who have a few hospitals specialising in obstetrics and gynaecology (including infertility treatments). Their switchboard is +358 9 4711.

It's very unlikely that someone who posted six posts to the board will take a look at the thread a decade later.
