As a biscuitmaker, I'm afraid you're going to have to make your
own, same for the gravy. But as you make buttermilk biscuits, learn
the word "piimä" here and now :D I usually make mine out of kirnupiimä,
but most any of them will do.

Well, goddamn - that is the bloody idea of going on an exchange to a foreign country - that things are *different*. There would be no bloody charm in travelling if every place was 1:1 to home. Why eat "home foods" when theres a local cuisine to explore? Why watch some guys run on a plastic carpet with an ovel in their armpit when you can go see kids play Finnish 'baseball' on a dirt field and run "all the wrong way". If Finland would be like at home then Finland wouldn't be a "foreign country" now would it? Those wanting to be "like at home" but freeze your ass off can go to Alaska. Finland doesn't have buttermilk biscuits, it has mämmi.
Cheers, Hank W.

your tune will change ;) And feel free to join us for mämmi next year
Hank

Mämmi - I *hate* the bloody stuff. As well as freezing your ass off in the winter.

Hence I'm saving money to re-wool my attic.... I need to be careful about the bats tho

It was not my intention to start a heated debate.

Hank, you are correct. The purpose of going to a foreign country is to experience different things. When I arrive in Finland of course I am going to do my best to sample everything that is different. After all I would not have applied to a university in Finland unless I wanted to experience a different country. I was just answering a question as to what my favorite cuisine is. Enk, I thank you for your response.

Hank, in response to, "why watch some guys run on a plastic carpet with an ovel in their armpit," my simple reason for watching college football is that I enjoy. I could give a lot more reasons, but I do not know if you will understand the amount of importance that I place on college football.

Onto questions of a much more entertaining nature. What are some of your favorite Finnish foods, places to go, etc. Please feel free to give me any information. This is not just meant for Hank W., enk, mCowboy, Jukka Aho, and sudentassu99. But for anyone else that encounters this communication thread.

I thank all of you for the information that all of you are giving me.javascript:emoticon(':D')

 I think you've just shut down the Finland Forum brain trust... Good luck getting any of us "lesser lights" to contribute anything useful...

All I can say...living in Canada, another cold, cold place ...is you'll be amazed by the winter cold and darkness.... Coming from the Southwest, if you think 25F is cold, you ain't seen nothing yet... And you'll be going to work in the dark and coming home in the dark... for two or three of months... Don't underestimate the cold...I remember moving from a relatively warm part of Canada to an "icebox"...Ottawa..the first winter I underestimated the cold and froze an ear...it still twinges a bit during cold weather.... :)

I don't think you'll find much interest in North American style "football"...Finland is ice-hockey country...

EDIT: Oh, yeah...and to get anything useful out of these forums...it pays to be skillful at "picking the flysh*t out of the pepper"... :)

There's a small, but enthusiastic following here in Finland, that's why Viasat started showing NFL matches live here for the first time on cable/terrestrial networks.

And don't expect the local hockey team to be better than watching anything better in the U.S, JYP can't play worth crap, but then I'm in Kuopio so I'd welcome a team of that caliber. Note touching someone with your finger results in a 5 minute major and game misconduct.
