I guess you literaly mean ambassador? Like someone who is actually not living in Finland? Or like his fellow heroes Vatanen or Häkkinen also absolutely not want to pay taxes here? (and make their contribution to to Finnish society). I guess that's going to happen, yes...

Car sports... :? :?

Damn.. that looked almost promising. I was expecting virtual fisticuffs. Then Simon went and slapped down the "it was all just a wind-up get-out- of-jail-free" card.

Frankly, I think they ought to take the jokers out of the pack before we get to play on here.

Either that or there has to be an irony emoticon. :)

I think Kimi does have a personality but his voice sounds like its just broken. I'm sure as he gets older it will develop and he'll get more relaxed in front of the cameras as he wins more races. Last year he only won one race so most of his interviews came after nearly wins and disappointments, hardly times to have a big smile and crack jokes.

I remember when everyone used to laugh at David Beckham's squeaky nervous interviews but listen to him now (probably after speech training)

Anyway I really hope Kimi & McLaren does the business this year and helps bring forward that overrated Shoemakers retirement.

Men at the Wheel

Post by Rosamunda » Thu Jan 29, 2004 10:19 am

I'm not sure that guys with wow! personalities lots of charisma and wit and intelligent conversation would ever become racing drivers anyway... there must be some (inverse) correlation here? Alain Prost (boring), Schumacher (dull) etc etc. Let's face it, anyone who is prepared to spend a large % of their time behind the wheel of a car (that has no radio), going round and round in (at best) a figure of 8 must have a really high boredom threshold. Ari Vatanen once said something like... all you need is an empty head and a heavy right foot. It's like airline pilots, there are cut-off IQs for recruiting them also...

OTOH, a big smile and lots of wit are not prerequisites for "having a personality". Miserable b.....s have personality too!

Ihansama :?

Having the personality of a plank and a voice that sounds like it broke recently are not prerequisites for qualification and it certainly does not win races (is that not the name of the game?)

...just the same as sounding like a squeaky twat and being married to an equal (a wife who also has !"#¤% for brains) are not prerequisites for kicking the most lethal free kicks in the world.

If he spoke with a lisp, he'd fit right in with the language

Argh! This attitude of discussing Kimi's personailty drives me up the bleedin' wall. For me, I couldn't care less if he was deaf and dumb (providing he could communicate with the team in some way for pit stops!). As long as he is a natural racer, that's good enough for me. If I want "personailty", and what is that anyway?, then I'll watch some social porn show, the likes of which Nelonen seem intent on churning out. There's some good old fashioned manipulated and manufactured personailty for you.

I've met Kimi on quite a few ocassions and all in all have spent a fair bit of time with him. Not trying to name drop, he is just a guy from Finlad after all, but I wanted to tell you how he really is. He DOES have a very interesting, quirky, and surprisingly thoughtful and caring personailty. Compared to every other 20-something Finnish male I know, Kimi is overflowing with "personality". So his voice is croaky? So what? Does he have to be perfect in every way to drive a car fast? F1 would be in a sorry state if speech skills were more important than cornering.

The problem is, and this is why I get so annoyed that people don't realise it, that F1 is a corporate business and what comes out of the drivers mouth (and goes in it to a certain extent) has to please the team and sponsors.

McLaren is the worst culprit for this. Does anyone remember how Mika was before he left Lotus? There's character for you, and it even showed on TV sometimes. But at McLaren it was "talk this way, walk this way, poop this way". Believe it or not, McLaren drivers are even asked to shower (when using the motorhome facilities) in a certain way and order. Something to do with the positioning of the bath towels. I kid ye not! And most of you will be aware that Alex Wurz was ordered to change his habit of wearing odd coloured race boots, before McLaren would ink his contract.

The JV and Irvine approach of speaking out is not welcome at McLaren. Whilst it may get more media coverage for the driver, the sponsors (and think of the sponsors McLaren have) want a certain type. A bland, emotionless suit who speaks of "the technical package" and "maximising the envelope". Siemens and Mercedes go wild for this sort of thing and so this is what McLaren gives them.

Kimi's own true character, or what I know of it at least, would in my view be a great marketing tool. But it is not what McLaren wants. They pay his wages and he complies. I wonder though, if he can stick to the Mr Boring tag for as long as Mika did. Mika said that after a while he found it very useful as he didn't have to think of what to say, just give a one word answer, and Ron was happy. Whereas if he had been more himself, he would have had endless meetings with the team press department about how not to behave.

Welcome to Team McLaren Mercedes: Please leave your personality at the door.

Simple equation:

sport ------> entertainment, showbiz in shorts
sportsmen -------> entertainers

"Here we are now, entertain us"

Plus the delight of being able to stick pins in the weaknesses of people who do things that otherwise leave us speechless - Pete Sampras was "so boring" it kind of compensated for the fact that he was the best tennis player on the planet.

Eddie Edwards, though, now HE was entertaining.

Surpising as it may seem, this was not a typo or lapse of memory..The awards for . 2003 will be announced on Saturday at Manala..and owing to sculdugary, and calender editing ....'s 2003 ends 31st Jan... But as Ace is I.C. sports. :? .he may well veto this concept as football is his only interest.

Interesting post Miss Jones, but Ron has signed up JPM, isnt he contrary to the McLaren mould you talk about. Will he have to now be Mr Boring and leave his personality at the door too? one word answers from him to interviewers questions? we'll see.

I agree that most important are the performances on track but if you are interested in F1 surely you are interested in the views and explanations of the major players on incidents that have just happened. Why does Ron always give his (sometimes controversial)opinions straight after the race on ITV? F1 thrives on being a circus.

Also remember most ordinary fans of F1 never get the privelege to be anywhere near the drivers to talk to them personally(another story).
