BTW Rob, a word challenge, if you get a job as an edeskäypä, what do you do?

Well...I couldn't figure it out...I was playing with the idea that it seems to have a literal sense of "pre-performer"/"pre-doer"....But I gave up and looked it up .... It's an old word which means....OK, I'll let someone else give it a try for a few days before I reveal the modern word...

Aw...the words must be unusual....just two words and you figured out where it came from ...Very good.

The first two lines were actually pretty easy for me, but then it got tough really fast...

..."Alone you are, you human, amongst all (the others), alone.

Maybe better punctuated as “Askelen, kaksi, sä luulet...”

“A step, or two, you believe to walk abreast of (/along with) the other person (a spouse, a companion, a fellow man?)
but (s)he’s already ahead of you, or you already left him/her behind.”

Jälkehes - jälkeen (sinusta)

So, in more modern Finnish:
Sinä luulet askeleen tai kaksi kulkevan toisen rinnalla,
mutta hän onkin jo edelläsi tai on taaksesi jäänyt.

... or something like that. The word order is still in a bit of a poetic form. Hmm, I apparently changed jälkeesi to taaksesi. Well, it works btter with edelläsi, so I'll leave it there.
