The Ashes
Well done England! Key players did their bit at key moments just a little better than key Australians (with one notable Australian exception who proved how difficult it is to collect a Man of the Series award from a LOSING side - when's the last time THAT ever happened, regardless of sport, eh?)
Two articles from the Independent here, though, that might give cause for reflection - or alternatively for flames that the writers have simply got sour grapes. Why WAS this match played in the fickle conditions of mid-September anyway? Probably because TV made demands on the ECB, maybe because everyone THOUGHT the big event was going to be 20/20 cricket and one-day internationals, the village green slogging matches for those with attention deficit disorder, a facsimile shirt, and a can of warm Stella. And so the deciding match in the Ashes was pushed out to a place in the calendar that it never would have deserved, and was always going to be a crapshoot, weather-wise...

There must be a website like "cricket explained for idiots" somewhere. Which would probably be the best option for meDo you have any suggestions? I'd like to find out what the game is about.
Just grinning and thinking what Sammy would make of snippets of cricket commentary...
"He's forward to that... rapped him on the pad.. there's a big shout... the crooked finger of death goes up and he's got him...
"And now McGrath to Bell, who's on a pair. Oh and he's bowled him round his legs... that was the ripper, pitched outside leg and took his off... Well, that'll be a contributiuon to the Primary Club"
"Off the back foot, glanced away nicely off the meat of the bat between silly point and gully, and Flintoff is chasing round from third man, but he won't cut it off..."
"We've got three slips, a man at cover point protecting the quick single, a long off, two saving four out on the midwicket boundary, a man down at deep fine leg for the mis-timed hook, and Katich under the helmet close in at silly mid-on for the one that goes the other way and gets the edge..."
Complete gibberish. Might as well be a rocketry manual in Urdu. And half of them were speaking a dialect of New South Welsh that set your teeth on edge...

I probably wouldn't know what to think... oh God, the Martians have taken over?otyikondo wrote:Just grinning and thinking what Sammy would make of snippets of cricket commentary...

But anyway, it would be great to learn a bit about the game so if you know any good websites please give us a hint! (I could use google, I know, but I'll ask experts first

I could explain it in detail, but if you're not a cricket fan there probably wouldn't be any point. Basically:sammy wrote:Erm... wot?becca wrote:The game isn't over yet at 335 for 9 and a whole 22 overs left...I haven't got the faintest idea what that meant

"England are doing frightfully well, and although the game technically isn't over yet the Australians don't have a chance of catching us up. Hurrah to the Australians for playing on anyway!"

Well, there was some cricket footage on the news this morning on YLE.sammy wrote:I probably wouldn't know what to think... oh God, the Martians have taken over?otyikondo wrote:Just grinning and thinking what Sammy would make of snippets of cricket commentary...Actually I just some half an hour ago read -that is, tried to make at least some sense of- the BBC Sprots News articles about the "Ashes returning home". Had I not seen this thread first, I probably would have thought it had something to do with a cremation of a military hero, or something. Goes to show, doesn't it, that Finnish tv does not pay much attention to cricket...

Just a short piece in the English news at 09:10 - some stuff about the FCA League FINAL last weekend, interviews with the Andy (FCA Chairman) and Tiina (umpire), and some footage of the Empire CC team playing at Viikki, etc.
Some helpful cricket links can be found via the CricketFinland website... http://www.cricketfinland.com/ and more specifically from the Tampere CC website... http://trecc.tripod.com/ (i.e. from the Misc. - http://trecc.tripod.com/tamperecricketclub2/id10.html )
Actually, although quite old, the following has often been quoted as being helpful to beginners. http://www.cs.purdue.edu/homes/hosking/ ... nation.htm

The Queen is out for the first time, over,

OK she's still there in silhouette.

The only difference between a rut and a grave is the depth.
Yeah, there's been a lot of fuss about it.mossman wrote:The Queen is out for the first time, over,
