2. Finland
3. Family
A first residence permit should be valid for a year. I am not aware of any category that would be valid for 5 years. What am I missing?
Not a first permit? P permit, but the card is only valid for 5 years.

Yes it is valid for 5 years. It did not say Type A or Type B. It just says "Perheenjäsen" under Oleskelulupatyypi.

Is your husband an EU citizen? It looks like you registered your right of residence instead of applying for a residence permit. For the former you get a residence card that is valid for 5 years (yes the terminology can be confusing).

Interesting. Today I learned something new.
Family members of EU citizens have a completely separate process. They don't undergo the same process as the rest of foreigners, whether they are themselves EU citizens or not. Because EU laws specifically say that EU family members should have full freedom of movement, Finland cannot tell them they need a residence permit, so instead they tell them they need a residence card. This card is valid for 5 years. Effectively, this means "registration of right of residence", but it's not the same, but it's sort-of the same.
Residence cards for the family members of EU citizens are issued for a period of five years or, if the intended stay is shorter, for the duration of the intended stay.

Every case is unique. You can't measure the result of your application based on arbitrary anecdotes online.

You need to have a valid A permit in order to get a P permit.

Thats probably something i call "whatever, @#$% you" rules in north. For example i can move to sweden and start claiming social secrity and tell all swedes to go @#$% themself and they cant do anything.
And thats how "en finne igen" started and i hate it. Drunks and criminals moved, of course because better social security and/or getting social security from both coutries, and that @#$% up hard working finns.

Before "not all" I do know not all were like that. I were "finne igen" as toddler and i do have friends/family in sweden and i honestly have to say it would be better to sweden if they werent there. Lot of good law abiding citizens but also career criminals and drunks. 3rd generation seems to be swedish, 2nd were mostly swedish. I dont know and there is no studies about those but seems finns assimilated after 2 generations and 1st generation and mainly killed their own.

There was huge problem because of finnish criminals, according to study 20-50 year old were @#$% who had high crime rates but for my suprise youth or old had same as swedes.

For curious, my mother visited her aunt and was hired on spot so we moved in sweden for 4-5 years. And yes i did live in finnish bubble with finnish daycare and finnish people around.

andira wrote:Yeah, just curious, since it seems to vary a lot.

1. How long did you wait for your first residence permit to be granted?
2. Did you apply in Finland or abroad? (Which country?)
3. On which grounds (family, work, study...) did you apply?

Cheers!
1, about 9 moths.
2. Finland but i didnt apply. They just gave it to me. (boy, 220377-xxxx, mother xxxx, finnish)
3. Family.

And that is consistent to all, unlike your question where differences can and will be huge and info about how others did wont help at all.

Well, looks like the lengths of res.permits vary, case by case basis sometimes, they said at Poliisi.
Example: husband's first permit was B, for Working Holiday for 1 year (Australian citizen). Now, the 2nd permit is type A, and is valid for 4 years, til 2019. So, apparently not all first A-lupa are for one year only, perhaps it's the status of being perheenjäsen that affects the validity period, then.

First res. permit:
1. 2 weeks (!)
2. applied in Finland via Migri
3. B permit, for 'Trainee' status, 1 year.

Second permit (but first A type permit):
1. 4 months (applied in November 2014, only took 1.5 weeks to get to the interview)
2. applied in Finland, local police
3. A permit, perheenjäsen, married to a Finnish citizen

And I could of course state like someone here, that I got my residence permit at the age of 1 day, being a native Finn, but I just don't consider that a 'residence permit'. But I agree on the point that it varies SO much from one person to the next, even if applied on the same grounds and at the same police station as someone else - looks like even in this thread someone in Turku got their A-lupa a month faster than my hubby (even though all the paperwork was in order, and a fully favourable report from the interview, etc.).

So one can't really draw any conclusions on how long one's permit handling will take, based on someone else's process. It is what it is.

And quite frankly, they should hire more people to handle these applications at all police stations. Be it 4 months, half a year or 9 months - that is just a ridiculously long time to wait for a any permit. The lengthy processing times have received some attention in the news lately, and we can but hope for some change for the better in the future. However, I'm not holding my breath.

Agreed, but only if the costs would be offset by increasing the price of RP application.

Hi! Congratulations! I hope the decision was positive!
May I ask if you had the same situation – two people with two separate permit applications? Also, when did your applications moved to "Being processed" state?

Thanks!
