Could bugs come out of vent outlet?

Post by agroot » Thu Sep 05, 2024 7:06 pm

As title. I'm struggling to find where huge flies and wasps could enter my apartment.

Definitely not the windows because there are insect nets and wire curtains. Or the door, because the latest one showed up a day since I haven't gone out while all room doors were closed, and it's quite noisy. And they were always large. The biggest was a moth the size half my palm and it smelled of piss, but the drains are always in use.

The last place I can think of are the vent outlets in which air goes out of my apartment. Could it be possible? If there is a small hole somewhere, wouldn't it be more likely for me to see smaller insects than large ones? But that never happened.

It partially depends on the insect. I get wasps in my balcony (which has sliding windows) but never any mosquitos. This is because wasps will crawl into places as well as fly and will crawl though small gaps. They are closely related to ants which explains this behaviour (ants evolved from wasps). So it's not just a question of size but the behaviour of the insect itself.

Ants are even more related to bees than to wasps.. and bees also crawl into little places

But on topic, check for nests in (between) the walls.

I was away for a week or so, windows closed obviously. On my return there were several dead flies - and a few live ones. I think they must come through the vent outlets.

Could they enter from the long vent inlet above window? Got a dead flying ant there but I thought if they come that way they'd normally be trapped behind curtain. The vent was open without filter, but there is no wind from it.

I also covered the vent outlets. Need to wait and see. It appears large flies are attracted to the Worcestershire sauce, and they always end up on my living room light or one corner of the particular window.
