Post by Chaouki » Sat Sep 21, 2024 10:26 am

Hello,

My wife received her finnish passport and under the birth place, it says ulkomaat. Is this normal?

Thanks!

Just checked my passport and my spouse's... Place of birth is the city where we were born.

Check your population register information on suomi.fi. Presumably it just says born abroad there. If you want more exact information on the passport, you will need to submit documentation to DVV about the place of birth.

Thanks! It seems to be the case.

Yes, ulkomaat in Finnish means foreign countries. If your wife was born outside of Finland, having ulkomaat listed as her birthplace on her Finnish passport is perfectly normal and accurate.

My Finnish passport (I'm originally from the UK) shows "Birmingham" which is where I was born. This is a bit strange since the country of birth is not shown in the passport, only the name of the city!

I assume this is how it's recorded in the population register. You can ask DVV to be more specific with Birmingham, UK. Maybe they will update it.

But who cares? I mean why do you care about this?

I don't care about just "Birmingham" as place of birth being on my passport, but since there is one in the UK and another in the USA (perhaps more), it seems a bit pointless to have the name of a city that's in multiple countries without showing the country name.

Hear, hear! Same situation here, too. My Finnish spouse's other passport (non-EU) shows the place of birth followed by "FIN." So, other jurisdictions do it differently.
