Travelling without a valid residency permit
My current temporary residency permit has expired. I have submitted my application for an extension and the interview is coming up. Am I able to leave and return to Finland with just a the application?

Google is your friend in this case:Anton Louw wrote: ↑Mon Apr 07, 2025 7:45 amMy current temporary residency permit has expired. I have submitted my application for an extension and the interview is coming up. Am I able to leave and return to Finland with just a the application?
"We do not recommend that you travel outside Finland if your residence permit has already expired or will expire during your trip. It may be difficult for you to return to Finland if your residence permit has expired."

I assume you have a certificate of having made the application. Print it out, if you only got it electronically.Anton Louw wrote: ↑Mon Apr 07, 2025 7:45 amMy current temporary residency permit has expired. I asked migri about travelling to and from the UK in this situation - they did not give any firm answers but advised me to speak to the border guard service. They in turn said it was OK, but only for direct travel UK to Finland (I am a UK citizen), not via any other Schengen country. And when I did travel, the border guards were OK with this certificate together with the expired RP card.
Your circumstances may differ of course, so you should check with raja.fi.

Airlines face hefty fines when they allow a passenger to board a flight to Schengen who does not have the right to enter Schengen, I would also double-check with the airline before booking whether they might deny boarding for the flight back to Finland.SecretCode wrote: ↑Mon Apr 07, 2025 3:39 pmI assume you have a certificate of having made the application. Here it matters if visa is required for travel to Schengen. If not, they will most likely just categorise as a tourist.FinlandGirl wrote: ↑Mon Apr 07, 2025 4:54 pmAirlines face hefty fines when they allow a passenger to board a flight to Schengen who does not have the right to enter Schengen, I would also double-check with the airline before booking whether they might deny boarding for the flight back to Finland.

Agreed that today the situation might be easier for UK citizens than for people who need a tourist visa.betelgeuse wrote: ↑Tue Apr 08, 2025 9:51 amHere it matters if visa is required for travel to Schengen. This might change when EES starts in half a year.
