Lived there many years ago for about 8 months. The "old chemist" pub and the "old bank" seemed to be responsible for my bank account dwindling.

Plus the "posh" department store which I have forgotten the name of (don't think it was Stockmann, on the far side of the market square).

It was several years ago though !

Hi i lived in turku for 3 years. It was a nice city to live in. i enjoyed spending nights on those pub boats along the river. but nowadays i find life much easier being a brit in helsinki, its just a bit easier to blend in here. but i have many fond memories of turku

In what way are you having problems blending in ?

A problem I see with many foreign people is that they invariably always stay in their own ethnic groups.. and then wonder why it is hard to mix :)

Hiya Luoto,

Compaired to living in helsinki, where there a far more foreigners and oppertunities for foreigners, I found Turku when i used to live there hard to blend in. Since theres not many brits or foreigners there i found myself constantly explaining my reasons of residence in finland, and found it harder to find work/place of study. Its just that much bigger in hki that i find it easier to blend into finnish society here.

Krash: Are you learning Finnish (I guess Swedish is not so important there for you)? When I was in Turku they seemed active with many exchange students, but of course Helsinki will have more foreigners. That can be good, but also counterproductive.

Yes It has got quite a good student population in Turku with the exchange programs etc. but i kept getting knockbacks from the uni's and polytechnics there :)

I can speak Finnish already but am still learning new things about the language all the time

i am of the same opinion as krash, have exactly the same problems here, and I don't speak any Finnish (some Swedish only) what makes the situation even worse...

I'd say that Turku people are known to be self-conscious towards out-of-towners. I'd say you're better off being a foreigner than from Tampere though

Whinge whinge moan moan

Oh Turku is ssooo unfriendly to foreigners....

Getting a bit tired of hearing this old saw. If you don't make the effort to speak or learn ANY Finnish, what the hell do you expect?? Emi, you live in Parainen, why not learn some swedish instead or as well and then you might find people a little friendlier.
If the attitude is, "Turkunians are very unfriendly and just ignore you", it is neither positive nor particularly inducive. Why dont YOU try talking to them? If you just want to be miserable and be ignored, then don't be so surprised that this is just what happens. I am sure you are a very attractive lady and am frankly surprised at the lack of response from the natives.

Yes, it can be difficult to make friends in Turku. But, if you just sit back though and make no effort, I don't think you have the right to complain of the natives taciturnity.

Get off your bum and do something about it! :!:

Kevin.

PS: On a side note, what has this topic to do with sport??

I already started learning Swedish half a year ago, doesn't help at all! That's the first thing. That's why I am moving to Sweden, maybe it'll be a bit better there.
and about talking to people in Turku - already DID, many times, but they just ignore me, or guys take the number and NEVER contact me ANYMORE even if I try, so... What's ur advice to that, huh?
I'm working from the early morning till 19.30 or even later everyday, have only weekends off and then time to go to the city - I have no money for petrol to go there more often neither time for that - people really don't want to keep in touch with the ones who they have to pay some effort to to be able to meet them, if you know what I mean. And exchange students have their own lives, of course they want to meet me, but they have better things to do on weekends, like trips to Helsinki or Tampere or Stockholm or so on.
am frankly surprised at the lack of response from the natives
me too, and I am already sick of making first steps in everything, especially that those guys really never contact me again so... what should I do?
the only ones that might get interested are at least 15years older than I am... quite difficult tho...

and about sport - it's this Dave who started the thing in 2 different (or only different named) topics, this one doesn't fit to the sport theme at all.
