Merchant Seaman Moving To Finland

Post by allan » Fri Oct 21, 2005 3:19 pm

I have a Finnish partner and baby. Were not living in Finland at the moment because my education and experience (oil exploration/extraction) is useless in a country without oil. I may have the opporortunity to work for a Norwegian company on a research vessel. I would move the family to Finland while l working on rotation (6 weeks home and 6 weeks away). In the UK this work qualifies you as a merchant seaman and you don't pay income tax only national insurance. Does anyone know how this works in Finland if your outside the country more than 184 days a year?

My hubby works in the Falklands for three months at a time then comes home to us in Finland for four weeks. None of us are Finnish, all English!
Graham chose which country to pay tax in and he chose the Falklands, very low income tax rates. He could have chosen the UK, the Falklands or Finland to pay tax. So if you want to keep the status quo then stick with what you know! The number of days you are actually in or out of a country (depending on how you look at it) does make a difference but not a major one and as Graham is away from Finland and the UK for more than the inland revenues minimum stay requirements we got the lucky chance to choose.

The Finnish Seamans' Union will dock your pay on a Finnish-flagged ship regardless you being on a Liberian Book or not.;)

You'll be regarded as "working/residing" abroad, if you are 6 months abroad, so don't imagine residence in Finland if the residence abroad is less taxes. However if your employer is on the "shipowner employer list" then you're eligible on getting a "seaman's tax card" . There is... rrr... I don't know as I was a stint in the 1990's so if theres any benefits or no.

So it kind of depends on a few things
Cheers, Hank W.

'Scuse me for sticking my oar/nose in.... but is it not the case that married couples are taxed separately in Finland anyway? There is no tax allowance for children and no (UK-like) "married man's allowance" etc just good old-fashioned incremental tax bands..... my GUESS is that it makes no difference to your Finnish tax if you & the Mrs. have different places of residence for fiscal purposes.... Can anyone confirm this???
