importing a car
ok ive seen people talking about importing cars etc
but i was wondering if i could import a car and get away with not paying the import tax
how long can i live in finland before i am classed as living here
is there a time limit i can have without paying the car import tax
eg the removal-goods thing!! how long am i aloud to live in finland before i have to pay the import tax on a imported car
can my dad come to finland and bring me a car for a presant etc would i have to pay the import tax if ive been living here
thanks in advance

as far as i know, the important point is not how long you have lived in finland before you import the car but how long you own the car you want to import to finland. you have to have owned the car at least 6 months before you moved to finland.
so it seems it is not possible to avoid the tax if you buy (or get as a present) the car after you already moved to finland
(i hope this somewhat cryptic message is helping...)

Short answer is No, because unless you have owned the car for 6 months before moving to Finland and have been in finland for less than 3 months when you declarethe car you will have to pay the tax before you can get finnish plates.
You could however drive it on the existing plates, officially for 6 months, however I did it for 18 mths with no problems, But then you run into problems because if for exampleit's on UK plates then after 12months max you will have no MOT or road tax which means your insurance will be invalid, (It would have to be UK insurance, no finnish company will touch you on British plates)

If you think it were possible, howcome us all silly gits in Finland aren't driving around with new cars?
I am far too tired of pointing out the sillyness in your question, so I'll just quote something off another thread.

A vehicle which has been imported temporarily
free of car tax may not be sold, hired out or otherwise transferred, nor may it be allowed to be used by a person residing permanently in Finland, unless car tax has been paid for the vehicle or unless the tax liability has been transferred as prescribed in Section 4 of the Car Tax Act.

I disagree with an earlier reply....no Finnish insurance company will touch you if you have British plates, actually we had no trouble at all finding an insurance company although it becomes cheaper as you get things like Kela card and Finnish plates. We chose Tapiola in the end.

The time has come, the walrus said to talk of many things....

Hrm, thats interesting to know. *But* in your case as the dh is working offshore, so while the car is residing in Finland the driver isn't?
Also I am wondering doesn't the expired MOT will provide some challenges - one needs to do a road trip to the UK on a regular basis?
