cargo and stuff

Post by LoTTa » Thu Jan 12, 2006 2:00 pm

Hiya !

We're moving to Finland with my boyfriend in March, I am actually finnish but i thought i might reach more people if I wrote in english. We've had a lot of trouble trying to find a company/ companies that would move our small amount of earthly belongings over to Finland (Helsinki) from here County Durham in the NE of England. It doesn't matter if it's by land, sea or air as long as it's the cheapest. As I said we haven't got much, no furniture or anything like that, that's all going just clothes and stuff like that. I would be SO happy if somebody could help us, please !
Thank you

Finnair Heavy cargo is the way to go. Cheap, fast, reliable and door to door!

You should be able to find a freight company that will stick your bits into one of the containers.
Here is a list of companies that work at this end in Helsinki.
See if you can find if any have a local office to you:

Check your local yellow pages for "Freight forwarders" and see if any name of companies match.

If you contact the usual removal companies or road haulage companies (there are some contacts on this forum if you use the search engine. Ek is one of them, also Beweship) you might be able to get a good deal IF you tell them that

a) you are 100% flexible on the dates
b) you will pack everything yourself
c) you will (even) deliver the goods to their depot if necessary
d) you will pick up the goods from Helsinki / Hanko wherever...

We did this with some stuff from France. We packed everything and left it in our flat and the keys were with a neighbour. The (IIRC Swedish) company called us the day before they were ready to collect and we arranged for the neighbour to open up for them. The freight company waits until they have a container for Finland and they add your stuff into it. Much cheaper than a special shipment, as long as you are prepared to wait a few weeks for your stuff.

Whatever you decide to do get as many quotes as possible.

JPP....I hope to god you didn't actually pay that much money in the end!

I have just shipped 278kg of stuff via Finnair heavy cargo and it cost me the grand sum of just under 250 euros including insurance and door to door service. It went from door to door in less than 48 hrs.

There was no restrictions on box size or weight either which was a good thing for us as I was sending mostly tools etc.

I was really impressed with the whole service.

Look up Finnair UK/England. Don't forget on the front page there is a choose your location thing, it might be worth trying International and UK.

If no joy then send an email to Oulu office they are really helpful and will give you the details that you need.

Funny you could only find Oulu, when I first started looking I could only ever find the Stockholm office!!!

Finnair codeshare with BA.

It would be reasonable that Finnair would deal with Hki-London cargo and BA would deal with the opposite direction i.e. London-Hki.

I'd check http://www.baworldcargo.com/

Hey there,

I've just got a quote from a company called 'excess baggage' - they seem to be really world wide, and emailed me a quote within an hour. They reckon it'll cost 117 pounds for a 'tea chest' size (51 x 41x 61 cms - no weight limit - they also provide the boxes for free) box via sea freight, England-Helsinki, door to door, and they will match other quotes from other companies, apparently. They seem to be rather efficient!! They don't have Finland listed on their website, but just email them. I have no idea if this is a good quote or not - to be honest, if I have 20kg extra on a finnair flight, they charge you 5 euro/kg for excess baggage, so it'll come to 100 euros, which is cheaper than sending it with a company anyway! I guess it depends on what/how much you send.....

Hope this helps....
