Going to Finland in March

Post by ryutombstone » Fri Jan 20, 2006 2:26 am

Sorry if this is in the wrong section, but I just have a couple of questions to ask. But first, I'll explain my situation.

I'm a 21-year old guy from Ireland who has fallen in love with a truly wonderful girl from Finland, she lives in a place called Ruukki not far from Oulu. I'm planning to meet her in the flesh for the first time in March, there are a couple of things I've been curious about.

Firstly, my main question - the weather will be a massive shock for me, I know - how cold is it typically in Ruukki in March? Will I need to take any medical precautions or anything before I leave? Keep in mind that we never get sub-zero temperatures where I live, so I'm expecting to freeze my b**** off, so to speak.

And secondly, how many people speak English over there? I ask this because I don't know a word of Finnish.
I know I could get my girlfriend to interpret for me, but I'd like to be able to communicate myself if possible. Obviously I intend to learn Finnish eventually, because I might end up moving there if I like it. ^^

Many thanks to anyone able to help.

They must have moved Ireland south by quite a bit since I lived there a couple of years ago, because they certainly had sub zero temps when I lived there!

Since it's not that far from the sea, the wind is one of the colding factors. I've searched for a chart of temperatures for you: http://www.fmi.fi/weather/climate_6.html Since Oulu is about in the middle of the country, you do the math between the temperatures from the far south, Helsinki, to the far north, Sodankylä.
It'll probably be below freezing in March, even quite cold in the beginning but towards the end it'll warm up a little - providing it's not an extreme year, when it can vary from very cold to above freezing, rain and sleet.
In 2004, according to the Oulu city website, the mean temperature in January was -9 C. So in March it'll be a bit warmer than that but there is definitely going to be snow (Unless, again, it is a very warm year with temperatures growing above zero.. Or, if it doesn't snow until you're here. It's practically all ice at the moment.)

No, nothing to worry about on that side.

Most of the younger people have been taught English since they were 10 years old. With anyone older, they might be well-taught on that side because of personal interest or because their companies have paid for courses. It varies a lot but generally speaking you'll be quite fine. You should concider that not all people are willing to speak another language, being too shy or whatever so the first one you stop on the street might not reply to your inquiries. And what I've been talking with my Finnish friends, it seems like they want to point out not everyone has actually learned the language even if they have been studying it at school...

I hope you'll have a good time and find what you're looking for ;)

PS: Learn the language. It'll take years to be fluent, if what is even possible?

You can also check out the current weather in Oulu, click the image to see graphs for past couple of years, and monthly statistics (they're measuring temps at VTT, next to the University of Oulu). At the moment we're going through a period of cold weather, so the figures you might see for today are not typical (but not so rare either).

Coldest months are usually January and February, but last year it was March..

ps. the Finnish Meteorological Institute gives you the official 5 day forecast, but i guess it won't be any use to you until later.

Don't you have to get inoculated against the rabid man-eating reindeer  or was it the mozzies that did that...
Cheers, Hank W.

Thanks a lot, especially to Lilianne, and sotka_ for that weather information. :)
I'll have to bring a lot of clothes then, at least now I know. ^^

And actually, about the language issue, my girlfriend speaks English really well, and I probably won't be spending time with many other people besides her anyway, I'm horribly shy.
So I suppose it probably won't be much of a problem - I'm gonna try to learn some basic phrases that I can use with her family, like greetings, and how to say "thank you" and stuff. That should do me for the duration of the visit, I hope.

you should fit in fine here then  I haven't encountered many Finns yet who will spontaneously start up a conversation with you, but maybe that's just Tampere :D

Heh, yeah I've heard that Finns are more reserved than others, which suits me perfectly.
I think I'm a lot more like a "stereotypical" Finnish man than an Irish one. :D
I think I'll fit in quite well, I'm really excited about coming to Finland (although it's not really because of Finland itself  )
