Double positive -> negative

Post by sammy » Wed Mar 22, 2006 10:40 am

A linguistics professor was lecturing to his class one day.
"In English," he said, "A double negative forms a positive.

In some languages, though, such as Russian, a double negative is
still a negative. However, there is no language wherein a double
positive can form a negative."

A voice from the back of the room piped up, "Yeah, right."
We have this in Finnish as well, by the way. "joo joo" can, depending on the situation and the way you say it, mean either a truly affirmative "yes" - or "yeah right".

-"I swear it wasn't me, some guys just suddenly came out of the forest and set our sauna on fire!"
-"Joo joo."

Not necessarily - saying "net-net!" as an exclamation, easily turns to a positive.
