USA to Finland as Au Pair

Post by IPlayDead » Sat Mar 25, 2006 2:00 am

Hi, my name is Autumn, and I am interested in being an Au Pair in Finland for a year to get to know the Finnish culture and such, because I would like to attend College in Finland for various reasons. If anyone has any suggestions that would be great. A native has been helping me out a lot, but I was just looking for other opions. Kiitos.

A new problem has currently arised. I have been informed that to become an Au Pair, you must be able to prove to the Finnish Government that you have studied the Finnish language, before you even apply for the Au Pair application. I live in Arkansas, and there are no Uni's around me that offer Finnish language courses. I was wondering if anyone knows of any ligit online courses that you could take just like online colleges. I need an actual certificate to prove that I have studied the language. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

Hi Autumn :) I recently found this:

http://donnerwetter.kielikeskus.helsink ... -index.htm

It's a decent tutor to begin with.

Good Luck!

Yes, My name is Autumn. Thanks! :)

yes, I've been to that website before, but I need an actual place, like a real class, so that I can get some sort of certificate, proving that I have studied the language.

It's a bit of a trip, but you could try Concordia Language Villiage. They have a really neat place (been there, done that.) and you can learn as much as you want to put the effort into. It's fun too! :D

I find it hard to believe that you would have to study Finnish to become an aupair here. I have met many aupairs who never studied any Finnish. Unless this is a recent rule, it does not exist. Before going through the trouble of getting a certificate, I would confirm from the Finnish government (or who ever supposedly set this rule) if you actially need one.

Embassy staff/Families for USA/UK/Canada/Australia/NZ etc would surely not require Finnish speaking Au Pairs?

Moi aussi. I don't see how that would be the government's business - although "they" can be meddlesome b******s. I'd think it's up to the host family to set the language requirements.
