Is it possible to import firearms into Finland?

Post by Criss » Sat Jun 24, 2006 12:44 am

Does anyone know the rules regarding ownership of private firearms?
Are there gun clubs or shooting clubsor indoor ranges for target practice?
What about deer hunting?

Thank you,

Criss

That's pretty strict. I really don't care for hunting but I do enjoy target shooting with pistols and rifles and skeet shooting with a shotgun.

Might be the best if I sold my guns before we leave.

Thank you for the information links.

It seems to me that you must belong to a "Shooting Club" of some sort in order to do all the things you mentioned. I'm not sure about brining guns into Finland. :?

I remember being part of any club was not necessary. Won't make any guarantees though.

I have observed in general that all discussions about getting guns have the worst myths , hearsay and misconceptions about what is possible and what not. Be it in real life or also on the internet. (just like the beginning of my post). That is because at worst even people who know crap about guns and dont want to know god forbid , never have fired one and most important never would even think about purchasing one have an know it all opinion about gun legislation. ( and this is targeted at no one on this board) The foreign element stuff makes this even more complicated. Best opinion would be from a gun enthusiast or someone who really is familiar with the issue.

It is not impossible. You just need to have the right type of gun for the right type of permit you would seek. Nevermind the bureaucracy is somewhat stringent. Oh, and for "target practice" IIRC you needed to have a long-barreled gun as they don't really like saturday night specials.

Deer hunting... well... first you need to get a hunting permit. So you can tell a berry-picker from a ptarmigan. And then theres the hunting licence, which are allotted to hunting cloubs, so either you need to own land or then you buy yourself into a local hunting club. A bit difficult - didn't say impossible - for a "city person" to achieve. Much easier if you live in the boonies. And knowing the right people also helps.

The practiacality of belonging to a shooting club is that you get to go on their ranges. There isn't that many around. Of course then theres the Helsinki Shooting Club you don't even need your own gun to go and shoot.

Hank is right. Of course you will need to check them in when bringing them on the plane ;) ...and then declare/register them when you land (with Customs I believe). Then there are regulations about how they are stored (lockable cabinet etc) and permits. I know this because a friend of mine brought his from the UK and he said the process went something like this.

Taking all that into account, wouldn't it be much less of a fuss, to sell your guns in America and buy new ones in Finland?
