A few questions.

Post by COBHC » Fri Aug 25, 2006 12:55 pm

hey i have a few questions i would like answered, so any help would be greatly appreciated. I have set a date for moving to Helsinki and i am saving every penny i earn, roughly i should have about 1300€ i know its not much but will this be enough? i will be moving in with my girlfriend so my place to live is all sorted.

Is it true that when applying at the maistraatti (sp?) i have to put a source of income down and a reason for living in Finland, i know i can put my girlfriend as the reason for moving to Finland but can i put my girlfriend as the income? just until i find a job (which i know will be hard) also i emailed Nordea asking about opening an account with them, they said i will need a deposit but didnt specify how much this deposit would be, i asked them but they still haven't replied. So does anyone know the amount of this deposit?

so if you couldn't be bothered to read that ramble, the questions were.

1. Can i put my girlfriend down as source of income at the maistraati? as i will be living with her.
2. How much would a deposit be at Nordea for opening a bank account? just a regular account for putting wages into.
3. Would 1300€ be enough to move to Helsinki with?

Thanks in advance.

A few questions.

First read this thread...

bb/viewtopic.php?t=14496

Nordea did not ask me for a deposit the proceedure I used was to go in and ask to open an account.
They just wanted my addresss in Finland...Your GF's will do..
That is enough to start with...Hand them a few hundred Euro to open the account.
Take your passport and GF with you in case they want a Finn to help or to guarantee that you are to be trusted.
They want your ID number..you get that from the magistrate..
The magistrate will give you that if you tell him that you are coming to Finland to be with your GF and to seek employment..that is adequate reason for a EU citizen.

Yes, it makes a difference if you are EU or non-EU. As you come from Manchester I assume you are British. Apply for an EU health card from the DHSS before you leave as that will entitle you to Finnish NHS if you need it in a hurry but won't be valid indefinitely. I think it is 3 mths.

I don't think a NOrdea account costs anything to open. Their website has all the info in English http://www.nordea.fi you should find info on there about a deposit. BTW don't expect them to give you a credit card. They won't. If you are lucky you might get a cashpoint card for waking withdrawals and maybe a debit card.

As for, is 1300 euro enough. Your guess is as good as mine. If your girlfriend is rich and generous then I guess you can live forever on it. But if she is expecting you to pay your share of everything then it won't last long. Probably not long enough to find a job.... but that's another story! Do you have a job lined up.... what are you looking for?

My girlfriend is not rich, and i dont have any employment lined up, i know its gonna take a long time to find a job, but €1300 is all i have. as i have to pay bills and so on here until i move. I will do any kind of work i dont mind, a job is a job, of course im expected to pay my share. and im not coming over thinking everything is gonna be plain sailing, i know this is going to be hard and so does my girlfriend. I already have the EU health card so thats no problem. as for a credit card. i dont want one, i would be lethal with one.

Good luck to you , i came here in same circumstances, finnish girlfriend and not so much readies in the bank, its not all about the money its what you do when you get here.
Hit the ground running and start looking for a job straight away, dont give yourself a grace period, because Finland is one of the best countries in the world or one of the worst depending if you are employed or not.
As long as you dont have to pay rent your money will go a long way......and the golden rule starting off anywhere is just get a job any job, doing anything just to get the money coming in, and thats a good platform to learn the language or find the job you really want.
