residence stamp

i went and applied for a residence permit today. everything went fine except they didnt stamp my passport. do i only get that stamp after my application is accepted? or should i go back?

that it will take up to 6 months for my permit to go through. i had to buy a visa to stay here that long...which i also thought you get a stamp for but its just a piece of paper.

The extent to which you have misunderstood what is going on beggars belief.

The officials who served you had at least a minimal duty to explain the matter to you. Where did you lodge your application?

So where did you get the idea that you were "buying a visa" to stay for 6 months?

we went to the immigration police and applied for the residence permit. they said to go downtown to get a number. we went downtown and they said you need a stamp in the passport. does anyone know what they are speaking of? trying to get answers at the immigration police is very difficult. is there anyone here that has gone through this procedure?

I applied for the resident permit in malmi once.
I am not sure that your stamp mean a sticker in your passport; the resident permit is just like that.
In Helsinki there are so many people in the queue. Normally they said the process to get resident permit will take 6 months. During that time you will have your passport and one piece of paper that say you applied for resident permit. You can write speed letter to ask them to get the resident permit faster with reliable reason.
You can call and check every week, because they will not call to tell you to take it!
It took about 3 months for me to get but during that time you can be in Finland without that sticker.

oh thanks for the info! i guess its a sticker i mean. just something in my passport that i can show if i travel or someone asks for it.

You're welcome.
That'd be the same. So if you would like to have it faster, I suggest you to write speed letter; just send it the immigration office. you don't need to go by person. Anyway, during it is in the process, you can't travel abroad.

OK, here is what I think has been going on.

You have applied for a residence permit because you are not a citizen of an EU country or a member of the family of such a person. If you get this residence permit, then it will be placed in your passport as a special sticker.

You paid a fee for this application.

It sounds to me as if you did not leave your passport at the police station. The paper that you were given is a certificate stating that the residence permit application is pending.

Whether or not you get the permit that you have applied for will depend on the justifications that you gave in the application.

So if rokingit you are a Finnish citizen and have a henkilötunnus... what the hell were you doing at the police station applying a residence permit for... err... does not compute. I need to go drink a couple of beers. My brain just fried.

On further consideration it occurs to me that maybe you are a victim of the Finnish State's enthusiasm to reclaim its lost citizens following the new Nationality Act.

According to this analysis, you received Finnish citizenship by declaration, came to Finland, attempted to apply for a residence permit at the local police, got sent to the population register centre and filed a notice of moving to your present address. Somewhere along the line you became convinced that you were applying for permission to live in Finland. Somewhere else along the line one or more public officials have also assumed that you need this.

This puts me in mind of an episode at the Employment Office in Tapiola some years ago when a senior employment services adviser (no less) became very agitated looking for the Finnish residence permit in my friend's Finnish passport, and finally announced that no services could be provided until the permit had been stamped in the passport. Yes, it really happened.

Back to your case. I fear that nobody on this forum will be able to accompany you until you start singing a consistent song.

Of course you could be smoking something...
