Net (e.g. rush the net) = Verkko = net , but I think they would say..aja maalelle..drive at the goal

Feet (e.g. the puck's at your feet) = Kiekko jaloissa

Give and go = syöttää ja menee

Wide open = avoinna..or auki

Open net = tyhjä verkko or tyhjä maali

Puck = kiekko

Shoot (verb) = lyödä

Shot (noun) = lyönti

Slot has no direct translation, I suppose (if means area in front of goal tender).

He said...ampua is for Guns...
In hockey he uses the Finnish for "Slap it" or "Hit it"...not "shoot it"...That is only for the Ref or an opponent not the puck.

The boards he refers to are either the boundries "rajat" or colloquialy the "laita..." When he smashes an opponent into them.

He thought that slot was meant to refer to a finding a narrow gap in the defence wall..like a letter box ..hence he used Aukko

In most cases, there are not direct & accurate terms in Finnish hockey vocabulary, and therefore misunderstandings are inavoidable, but I'll give it a shot.


Slot = laukaisusektori (tarkemmin kolmionmuotoinen alue maalivahdin ja lähimpien aloituspisteiden välillä)

Back door = literally it's takaovi, but it might also refer somewhat to making a goal behind the net, eg. for example Finnish vanhanaikainen?

Point = aloituspiste (or piste)

When I say "slot", I mean the area between the circles, about 3 meters in front of the net. Is there a shorter, or more colloquial word rather than laukaisusektori.

When I say "back door", I mean a situation like when the goalie is on the right side of the net and is looking behind the net. This leaves the left side wide open. So if a winger slides into position to receive a pass and easily shoot into the open net, you have to yell "back door" to alert the defenders that he is there.

Also, for "boards" I mean where you are trying to coax your teammate into sending a pass off the boards...

Ok, I'm not a hockey player so I was not sure what that slot means exactly. Perhaps laukaisusektori is not a right word. Perhaps "maalinedus" would be better - but on the other hand, one might understand it as right in front of a goalie.

Make a new Finnish word! Slotti!

As I said, I'm not a hockey player, and they might easily have a term for that, like "LAITA!".

In Finnish a pass by hitting the boards is laitasyöttö.

Funny you should say that I told my Oululainen hockey playing colleague what you said about him "hitting the boards too often.."
His comment.."He either plays salibandi or is a cheer leader for Jokeri!"




He now says that there is no Finnish word for the area between to the two face off circles...but suggest that Pimppi is better than Slot...unless you are a Swede...

It was fun to watch Esa Tiki Tikkanen back in -90, when Oilers was visiting Calgary. Flames were ripping their ears off.
