Could you let me know if the University offers any language courses for Winter(I live in Helsinki)...esp they should teach the language in English...last time when i attended a free course the Finnish language course was taught in Finnish and it made no sense and i quit...I am not a Kela holder so i wudnt get any concessions but I wudnt mind doing the course as long as it is taught in English.
What would be the approx cost, the duration (i wudnt mind doing it 5 days a week say for an hour or two per day), and if any job assistance provided?
Thanks in advance.
Finnish course in the University in English
Generally the courses are NOT taught in English. Simply because English is not the common language of all the students (many students do not speak English at all). However, in my experience, most of the teachers are willing to answer questions is English at the end of the lessons.
I know it is scary at first but it can be done (I did Part I, II and III in Finnish and am still alive) you just have to be a bit zen about it. You don't actually need to understand every word.

There might be one person out of 1,000 at the U. of Helsinki who doesn't speak English, so they don't use it - It's ridiculous, they rather have the whole class confused than just one person. Even though that during my 5 classes at the University, I never had a classmate who didn't speak English. Oh and a Finn can get his/her doctoral for free, but we need to pay 120e per course, makes no sense.penelope wrote:Generally the courses are NOT taught in English. If you want English, unfortunately you'd need a private tutor, and they're $$$$.
Just for the record - a person of ANY nationality can get his/her Doctorate "for free" - if he/she is accepted as a Doctoral degree student.Phil wrote:Oh and a Finn can get his/her doctoral for free, but we need to pay 120e per course, makes no sense.
Open university studies and open enrollment language centre courses (ie if you're not registered as a degree student) are a different matter altogether. Finns pay for those, too
