do you need a round trip ticket?

Post by NewEnglandNative » Thu Feb 01, 2007 12:07 am

Good evening all!

I plan to move to Finland from the U.S. to be with my wife. I haven’t found a job yet, but have had a couple of good offers. My hope is to get a one way ticket, have the interview and "hopefully" get the job. I would leave the country for a month to visit my wife’s family in South Africa and be able to return with a residency permit to start my job.

I guess the distillation of my question would be, could I even ENTER Finland with a one way ticket?

Thank you in advance for your kind replies.

One way ticket is typically more expensive than a return.

Yes, you can. I did when I first came to Finland, but I also had a job and the work permit all sorted as well. In your situation, I don't think there will be a problem.

Yeah, one way is WAY more expensive than RT (over $1000 vs. $700 when I was looking). Get a RT and don't use the second half. That's what I did.

So you can do NYC --> HKI and not show up for HKI --> NYC. You can't use the 2nd half at a later time either.

I had a similar question a few months ago:

Edited to add: But make sure your trip that you want to take is the first half of the ticket. For example: say I want to go to NYC. I can't buy a RT for NYC that originates in NYC and then skip the first half and only take the second half from here to NYC. If you miss the first half, they automatically cancel the second half.

I flew one-way from Australia to Finland (was cheaper).
Entering was no problem, but I have EU passport.

I entered Finland from the UK with a single ticket (£18 Ryanair including taxes). I only intended staying a few months at the time but hadn't yet decided when I would fly home.

Thank you for all your help. The cost of the ticket one way is dramatically less than a round trip, so I think I would rather save my money to pay for incidental moving expenses.

Cheers, all!
