Shall I have you guys opinion? about to move to Helsinki
My boyfriend got a permanent working contract over Helsinki last year. Now we're considering to move together over there. I'm in Beijing, China now. BF is working in Helsinki.
But I'm wondering it might be not easy for me to find a good job over there. How do you think about it? I've got 4 years working experience at top advertising agency in China. And master's degree in Psychology. But I can't speak Finnish, so guess things might be not good for me to find some job requirs a lot of communicating.
Another option is to pursue phd. study. But my GRE score expired early this year. Really don't want to waste the time on the exam. Do you think is possible to get the phd admission w/o GRE? And I have no idea about the funding yet. It seems different with conditions of US, such as scholorship or RA/TA.

Well, for the PhD admission you need to figure out with the university itself
http://finland.cimo.fi and for funding you got that boyfriend to keep you in bread and board I guess. Jobwise, as stated before, the higher up the food chain you are the less of local language you will need. If you can find a niche job where they need your "Chinese connection" then you might land in nicely. The question is though what passport you hold, as if you're a non-EU and come as your boyfriends spouse (if you will be classified as spouse as you don't live together) then you will have to go through the hoops and whistles to get a residence permit.... the small print at http://www.uvi.fi is also beneficial to read. So there is a lot of grey area here with a lot of if-then-else and you need to make a few "plan A" and "plan B" and cdefg...

wow, here comes a really timely reply:) Thank you~
Firstly, yes, I'm non-EA. The passport I hold is Chinese one. I did live with my boyfriend for over three years before he left for Finland. I got to know this can be classified to "spouse", but I just have no idea what kind of supporting document I should prepare, such as some letter from the neighborhood? In case such supporting document wasn't recognize to be effective by embassy, then I guess it's hard for me to get the long-term residence permit? Maybe it's better for me to apply the short-term visiting kind of visa, such as three months? And is it more easy to sucessfully make the long-term residence permit in Finland, than in Chinese?

Not really, you should get the paper that says you have been registered living together etc, and then apply for a residence permit. because as you know getting a tourist visa for a Chinese person is semi-impossible (did they publicize the case of the Anhui anti-corruption officials who got deported for false papers) - so don't pay for anybody for "organizing" a visa - and then if you come only as a tourist, if you find a job or a study place then you must go back home to China to apply. So that would be counterproductive considering all the paperwork. The embassy will say what kind of paperwork they want. Though if you come as a spouse supported by your boyfriend then he has certain requirements for income etc.

No you can not. If you read the http://www.uvi.fi - theres only one or two special cases (when the moon an planets have the right positions in the sky maybe) when you can apply in Helsinki. Otherwise it is always "go home to apply". Or of course you can apply - but you sit and wait and hen get the "go home to apply" and get escorted to the airplane.anniewangster wrote:No, I mean I could apply for long-term permit after arriving at Helsinki,

Anniew, you mentioned you have a Chinese passport... does that mean you're of Chinese origin, ie do you speak/understand Chinese? Thought I'd ask since, as for the China connection, just maybe this forum might be usefulHank W. wrote:If you can find a niche job where they need your "Chinese connection" then you might land in nicely.

(I'm afraid I have no idea about it actually contains, as I don't understand Chinese - but if it's something to be likened unto this BB, at least there might be some useful info. And undoubtedly a Chinese version of Hank!
