fishing in southern finland
Hi,
I live in Espoo and am trying to learn how to fish. I have a spinning rod and fish in lakes and the sea, but not streams/rivers. Which fish can i hope to catch and where? What type of lure do i need to do so?
Please help as i am keen to start but have absolutely no clue what to do!
Many thanks,
George

I am no fisherman, but a couple of years ago I found myself from this site: http://www.fishinfinland.com/ and liked it. It is one of the rare fishing sites that is not commercial. Too bad he hasn´t updated it in three years, and too bad that he never finished southern Finland part. But otherwise you will find all kinds of info.
Two places where usually always are people fishing are the bridge between Ruoholahti and Lauttasaari, and Kartanonkoski in Vantaa. I suppose the fishermen in Kartanonkoski are trying to catch salmon. It returned to River Vantaa some years ago when the water became cleaner again.

First you need a fishing permit

Then you need some lures..... (Biltema, Hong Kong are the best deals but.... if you walk into any of the fishing stores, like the BIG one on Kalevankatu in Helsinki, I am 100% sure you will find a fishing geek and you will make his day if you ask him for advice!!! I have spent a significant amount of time in fishing shops with my husband and kids and believe me, they love talking about fish.
You can catch pike, perch, pike-perch, whitefish etc
Here's a pic of a pike one of my boys caught a couple of weeks ago:

He caught it with a very small lure.....

Well.... my lads seem to catch the same stuff wherever they fish: pike, pike-perch and perch definitely in the lakes AND the sea. The pic above was taken at the mökki, he caught the fish in a small lake (about 1km as the crow flies from the coast), out the back of our canoe. My son thought he had caught the line on a rock at the bottom of the lake. Was over 7kgs.
The whitefish are sea fish I believe and are a bit more tricky to find and catch. There are some good guide books in the shops (in Finnish) and there are maps on http://www.ahven.net. We have been out in early spring around the islands in Pohja bay but never had any luck.
The locals tend to be a bit cagey about where to go for the big fish....

In the lakes in southern finland you'll catch lots of different fish from roach to pike. If you are spinning you'll get pike and perch. Pike are usually around 2-4kg but as you see they grow much bigger and pike of up to 15kg will be caught most years. Perch are smaller from finger length to about 1kg. In general the bigger the lake the bigger the possible size of fish. So as you can imagine the sea provides some nice opportuinties. In general it is difficult to fish the sea successfully without a boat since you cannot cover very much water. While both pike and perch move around you will be much more successful if you move around until you find them! Remeber tho that pike are solitary and perch are a shoal fish so if you get a pike keep moving and if you get a perch stop for a while. For pike relatively large lures are needed, rapala lures are expensive but good. I would suggest something about 2 inchs/5 cm long since this is big enough to interest pike but small enough to be taken by perch. In generaly you'll be more successful if you fish near something that provides a hidding/ambush place for the fish, fall trees and weed beds are good. You'll want a line with about 5kg breaking strength and a wire trace is useful pikes teeth are sharp and they can cut though the line. Any specific questions mp me.

Lure fishing beginnings Hints tip & advice when starting
Hi ChrisLondonchris wrote:Do a search for nick caine lure fishing and you will find more than enough to get you started.
Thanks for that plug

For info, georgemossford and all, we have an ASK THE TEAM a QUESTION Section too
a Competition and many, many articles, as you say
.. mainly of course relating to UK waters, but quite a few are also
relevant to you guys & gals over there.
We have a couple of Scandies [no disrespect] on the Team
& ladies too

We like Scandinavia best for its grayling .. and pike too of course
I guess the rules of this Forum mean that I can't post the actual
URL of our website, but readers may be able to find us more easily
if they assemble these lines (there's no www)
members.
lycos.co.uk/
lureangler/
Actually I have just checked the Rules & Regs ... so you can access
our website here
http://members.lycos.co.uk/lureangler/
And if anyone would like to contribute a short article on fishing in Finland, we'd very much welcome it ... word-is that you've got a couple of quite good lure companies in Finland

Tight lines to you all !

I went fishing yesterday in Lohja, got 2 pikes, not that big ones. Seems the fish don't like to bite that much at this time of the year. Oh well, better luck next wednesday!

You need a still day. The boys have noticed that on a windy day it is difficult to catch anything much.
That pike was only about 7.5 kgs. Looks bigger in the picture. Our neighbour caught two over 10 kgs last year (I think one of them was about 13 kgs). I'm sure it has something to do with the local plant nursery dumping fertilizers into the lake!!!

In that case the president of Finland is utterly desperate. Traditionally fishermen bring him/her a pike for Christmas, and it is eaten as Christmas Pike at Christmas Eve dinner. Can you actually eat any of these?Pardon my ignorance but pike doesn't look like an eating fish..unless you're desperate..
