pregnant alone

Post by feeldat » Sun Sep 23, 2007 12:09 pm

I am a student in Finland married to a Dutch man. Pregnant now. I cannot go to Holland because I should take language test and then apply for special kind of visa to enter the country.
He cannot come here now, because he has job there. It seems that the baby is going to be born here. I was refused to get Kela card (because I am a student).
Do I have to pay for having bay here?
Can I apply for any support (maternity or so)?

I am not from EU, but first came here to work.

What's with Holland? It sounds a little draconian - especially since you are married to a Dutch national.

If I were you I'd seek advice from immigration professionals. And go and sit the test anyway. The worst you can do is fail which would mean you are same situation you are in now.

As a student you wont get Kela if youre not working too. No Kela card means, no maternity money and no help with medical costs. So yes you will end up with a large hospital bill for scans and the stay in the hospital.

Your husband needs to look into ways to get you to Holland, I would have thought seeing as you are married it would be easier.

If not then Im afriad it might be easier for you to go home to have the baby.

How far pregnant are you? You really need to start with the health checks as soon as possible.

Does anyone know if sosiaalivirasto can help her in anyway? If you go to your local social office there must be something they can do to help you. One amazing thing I can say about Finland is that they have sincere concern for the well being of children. Whatever the case, don't panic because you WILL get the necessary help you need if you stay here. No one is going to let you give birth in an alley or let you go through your pregnancy without any check ups, etc...

PM me if you can't find any answers on your own and I would be happy to make some calls for you. I'm a single mom who was pregnant and all alone here in Finland during my pregnancy, so I can really appreciate what you must be going through.

Best of luck to you.

Hi feeldat, I am also a student, but in Jyvaskyla, and also pregnant, and also non EU citizen, but with my husband here. And I am also looking for any aid or benefit, either for delivering or for the baby afterwards.

I had/have all the same fears regarding pregnancy in Finland and costs here.

I am also refused to get any benefit from KELA, but as they informed 'maybe something changes this Autumn', however, we shouldn't rely on that.

I visited neuvola two days ago and all analyzes and visit to the nurse were free. I haven't visited a doctor yet, as I was told by health care centres, each visit is about 50euros, and normal delivering for non-EU citizens is about 1300-1500euros.

As soon as I get exact information myself I will let you know immediately.

I am going in the beginning of December. When is your due date?

pregnant alone

I am Russian and I came to Finland 3 years ago to work as a teacher. After some time there were less lessons so I entered a polytechnic and kept working. This year for some reasons there no lessons at all for me and my contract expired in June, though I have a valid visa till June 2008.

So, I decided to register as a full time student this year and KELA refused to give me the card.

We planned my move to Holland 2 years later and didn't check much. But since I got pregnant this summer we decided to do it now. But it will take few months (language test, applying for a special kind of visa etc. So marriage was partly because there is a risk that we are not in time in Holland and it means that the baby will get only my citizenship.
I started going to neuvola and didn't pay anything. But I was waiting for the reply from KELA. Now I am a bit nervous.

I planned to study till December (since I am here anyway) and we are trying to find some kind of solution. It always impossible for him to come here and work.
I have relatives in Russia but it is my 4th year in Finland and I am more connected to hear now. But not on paper as it happened. :(

You were good enough to pay taxes and social contribuitions(?) for two years in Finland but not worth of Kela benefits now that you're unemployed and decided to educate yourself? Sounds outrageous, please check again with Kela, I hope you've been misunderstood. Kela staffers give wrong every now and then and I can imagine this as being one of those rare cases that nobody in the local office has ever heard of.
Also, yes, Holland requires a language test just for residency, even if you're married to a Dutch national. Pretty dang nasty isn't it?
I can see why, but what if in addiction she is bearing a child of Dutch national?

^ I concur with ajdias and tumasininen.
Seems that either you are given a wrong information or there was some misunderstanding. I'd recommend you to ask some Finnish friend to help you in this matter.

Thanks, I will find some lawyer and ask. My Finnish friends are also a bit surprised by this.
Any contacts of lawyer who work with immigrants?

See now you are not unemployed anymore. Its worst idiocy on the planet, but you have to sit at home to fill in työtön five days a week and watch the Bald and Hairless and drink beer at the pub at 9am... If you decide to do something yourself - liek pick up studying haahhahahaahahaahahahhhahahhhaahha - idiot!!!! (*)

Been there, done that, this is FINLAND, remember. No initiative, sit in the box.

(*) so I left to where the pepper grows.

I know what you mean, been in that situation myself, but the system must respond to a blatant need like feeldat's.

Well, the system response we know.

The fact that people deciding to do some "intelligent" instead of sitting around get then punished for their initiative is something that makes my blood boil.

But this is a bit sidestepping the issue at hand. Of course hindsight is 20/20.

can't really understand what you mean. I still study (for some time which is nice), I have no job from recently (and I don't like it because I had no social support and no parent's help since I was 16 and moved to start my first University). The only difficulty is that I am pregnant and limited in Job Looking (which is not nice). Otherwise it would be easier to find income.

And even if I could afford to do nothing, I would still do something.

Thank you for reaction anyway.
