Kela Card
might take a while, depending on your situation. I applied for a kela card on 2.11. and was "awarded" one on 21.12. They send it to you through the post.
They check if you're insured elsewhere (in your country of origin) before you get one (which is one reason for why it takes a while, I guess) and have to decide if you're eligible in the first place etc.

Well, if you for example become sick and need to go to see a doctor, you have to show your KELA-card. Also if you need prescription medecines you show your card at the pharmacy and they cost less. If you are entitled to any social security benefits, you need a KELA card. It has a personal identity number in it, and that is needed in many places, also in the bank. And it does not cost anything.

OK. go to http://www.poliisi.fi and read. If you are from a vienna convention country you can exchange according to certain rules.

Hi,
I arrived fo Finland late March and it has taken almost 6 months to get Kela Card.
Espooman, there are 2 different things:
1. Personal number: you get this from the police in Malmi. You need this almost for everything (I don't think for bank account as I opened one time ago only with my passport)
2. KELA card: this is given by KELA after you fill in form Y77 explaining why you came to Finland (family ties, work, study, ect.) If it is for work it will be much easier. If it is for family ties, you have to present marriage certificate if you are married. But, if you got already the personal number everything should go smoothly.
My advice: INSIST Go there, phone, mail them....it works. It takes time as they have to find out if you are covered by another state. In the EU they ask for E104 or E106 documents. If you can ask for it yourself and take it to the KELA office it makes things easier. But do ask them at what state your application is and what is missing, they do answer.
I hope this helps.
