Where to find a cot bed in Finland

Post by carolinemaher » Thu Oct 04, 2007 5:24 pm

Hi there,

Does anyone know where I can find a cot bed in Helisnki? you know, where your 18 month old (ish) has outgrown the standard Finnish cot (115 x 60) and needs a bigger cot that then changes into a bed (see link below 143 x 77). My little one can't sleep right at the moment as she keeps thrashing about and bumping into the sides all night long as its just too small, I wonder what all the Finnish families use until the kids are too small to fall out of a regular bed?

The only one I've seen is in Stockmann for a ridiculous EUR700?!

Thanks
Caroline

It is called pinnasänky in Finnish. Click this: http://images.google.fi/images?hl=fi&ie ... uvia&gbv=1

You see lots of pictures and get www-addresses of places where they are sold.

I checked the price of just one: That Vaunuaitta´s BRIO BASIC costs right now 117 € (normally 136 €).

I agree with Richard berman´s link . My kids have slept in that type of bed since they were about 13 mths & we have never had a kid fall out of one, EVER!!! climb out & jump out, yes, but fall out when asleep, NEVER

EP - you mentioned vaunuaitta Brio Basic, where can I find this? sorry, looked at your link but can't figure out how to find what you mentioned.

I wouldn't put an 18 month old in that bed from Antilla, if the baby stood up they could, theoretically, fall out especially in the night when they wake up disorientated and its dark.

If all else fails I may resort to your mattress on the floor Tummansininen!

Thanks anyway for your replies.

The brio one is just a cot as we bought that for our baby, http://www.brio.fi under the Red section - To be.

The bed Richard posted is quite safe and what most people use after the cot.

Lastentarvike do have a Sweddish made cot that is really huge and would sleep a toddler no problems. They dont have it on their website but last time we were in the shop they had it on offer for something like €69.

Richard, of course that is your opinion, but I think that bed is high enough from the floor that if a child did fall out of it in the night I do think that could hurt them, but anyway, I didn't really want to get into a debate about it, I was just specifically asking about a cot bed as my child has special needs and a bed at this point in her life is not suitable..

Caroline, definately check out Lastentarvike if you can. The one on display was pine with blue paintwork at the ends. I think you could still get a 5 year old in it! It was in the Varisto shop.

I assume you mean a "pinnasänky"? (I'm not totally sure, since that's what most babies here sleep in, the only thing before that would be the maternity package box. :))

You can find them in more or less any store that has baby supplies. Even Citymarket has one (probably not in every store, though). I think the cheapest can be found from Ikea ( http://www.ikea.com/fi/fi/catalog/categ ... m/10421-2/) and Lastentarvike ( http://www.lastentarvike.fi/default.asp ... imaid=9#54).

For instance we had the cheapest Drewex from Lastentarvike: http://www.lastentarvike.fi/default.asp ... ikoimaid=9
Didn't cost much and worked fine. I don't remember what it cost, but it was way under 100e.

Started to think, that most pinnasänky are 120x60 (or there about), so they won't work if you need bigger.

There really aren't that many options if you want a bigger bed, but with high rails. Most kids here go from a standard pinnasänky to a bed like Richard put a link to, so there isn't really a market for anything else. But ask from speciality stores like Pikkukenguru ( http://www.pikkukenguru.fi/). I think they have a larger from-catalog selection than is on their webpage, but they aren't exactly cheap.

One I did find was this: http://www.on24.fi/s%C3%A4ngyt_patjat/l ... arvet/7705
That one is 70x140 cm and can be converted to a bed! It includes lower sides for when it is a bed.
This one is also 70x140, but the sides cannot be removed: http://www.on24.fi/s%C3%A4ngyt_patjat/l ... arvet/5784

Hi,

Amazon.co.uk has a couple of cot beds (by East Coast) that can be delivered outside of the UK. At a quick glance it looks like the delivery cost is about £25.

Might be worth asking them for a quote of the delivery charge.

Also, I've seen the Stokke Sleepi in Vepsälainen and Kodin 1 which might be suitable, expensive though.
