Cheating on an entrance exam
Cheating on an entrance exam
at my school at the moment there is supposedly some investigations going on surrounding a few of the new degree students and their acceptance into the school. these people apparently received VERY high scores on their entrance exam, yet in maths class, they cannot solve even the simplest of equations and they do not appear to be capable of scoring more than 30% on a test.
i'm curious to know, has this issue has ever been brought up in finland before? there is no way for the head teachers, and those who decide who to accept, at the schools to make sure that the person who applies is actually the person who takes the entrance exam.
from what i've heard, there's a good chance these people are going to be kicked out of finland.

Fake papers aren't anything new, nor fake students... but I think I read was it in China for their school examinations they had something like this happening.stewy wrote:i'm curious to know, has this issue has ever been brought up in finland before?
As I say to some of the people posting here, its an IQ test to find the applications form - for a reasonthere is no way for the head teachers, and those who decide who to accept, at the schools to make sure that the person who applies is actually the person who takes the entrance exam.

Cheers, Hank W.

I guess its the blind trust of the system that allows these cheaters in...but the system has a way of finding these things n weeding em out..
after which the system adjusts itself to address that similar things dont happen...
U see this is the Biggest asset as well as the downfall of the Finnish Culture and system..
The most adorable and highly respectable quality of trust is explicit whether for a Finn or a Foreigner..but at the same time ..when something like this happens...That trust becomes implicit to a foreigner..after which how can a foreigner expect to be treated with trust ? Thats why the safeguards...as The culture has been brutally betrayed many times!!!

hmm well, it's not the chinese students this particular time. it's a certain country from africa...Hank W. wrote:Fake papers aren't anything new, nor fake students... but I think I read was it in China for their school examinations they had something like this happening.
have they ever tried to do something about it? i mean, i'm sure there a lot more real applicants who didn't get accepted because these people did. seems kind of stupid.

Re: Cheating on an entrance exam
Ah, see I vaguely remembered something that they were going serious about DNA testing the students... In Nanjing the number of hired test-takers taking the Self-Taught Higher Education Examinations held this June and July was higher than last year. During the two-day exam period, fourteen students were exposed as hired test-takers.stewy wrote:hmm well, it's not the chinese students this particular time.
Well, atleast they had the decency of appearing at school and wanting to study.it's a certain country from africa...

hmm some of them... all of them come late to class constantly and a couple don't appear to be very interested. also, with the amount of phone calls they receive, they must work for a helpline or something.Well, atleast they had the decency of appearing at school and wanting to study.
do you think they'll get kicked out?

The educational institutions have the right to revoke the admission decisions if they find out that the students/applicants have given false information in the application phase or cheated in the entrance examination (or sent someone else to do it for them).
The institutions really revoke decisions, even in case of Finnish applicants. In case of Finns it is usually that they have (possibly by mistake?) entered higher grades into the application than they really had and when they bring the original certificates for checking, their admission is revoked.
In case of foreigners this has naturally more severe consequences as when they mislead the educational institution, they at the same time mislead and gave false information to the Directorate of Immigration and when the admission is revoked their residence permit for studies becomes to be on false grounds and is most likely revoked as well. Usually the educational institutions inform the Directorate of Immigration about these decisions.

stewy, i'm having that same experience at my school too. the chinese, on the whole, are unbelievably ill-mannered and disrespectful of the education system and the teachers. they refuse to turn off their mobile phones during class and it seems that plagiarism is a cultural norm. i also suspect most of cheating on their ielts tests because hardly anyone of them can speak english intelligibly. i've resolved to stand up for myself and the teachers and openly censure any chinese (or africans) who step out of line.
I have heard about this too about foreign students here in Helsinki. Especially regarding copying of homework assignments (as in, the one clever one does the work and the rest copy and get the best grades).
I don't know if the best thing is to complain to the teacher or uni or what. It enrages me though, that people come here for a free education, cheat during it, and get the best grades, and then are seen as "better" applicants when it comes to going ahead with studies (instead of the person who honestly worked hard.)
One can only hope there is some poetic justice in the world when it comes to the final exams. Then again, I am sure there is a way to cheat on those too.
Maybe if enough people wrote letters to complain...I for one would be willing to sign a petition as an open letter to uni's here that something needs to be done about the cheating.
Edited to add: Then again, it sort of is a suitable introduction into real life where people lie and cheat constantly.

you HAVE TO APOLOGIZE to us
Hey, as a Chinese I want you to apologize to us. I don't know why you said like this, but obviously there are cheaters around world, not only in China!Salli wrote:stewy, i'm having that same experience at my school too. the chinese, on the whole, are unbelievably ill-mannered and disrespectful of the education system and the teachers. they refuse to turn off their mobile phones during class and it seems that plagiarism is a cultural norm. i also suspect most of cheating on their ielts tests because hardly anyone of them can speak english intelligibly. i've resolved to stand up for myself and the teachers and openly censure any chinese (or africans) who step out of line.
I think everyone know there was a FINISH student studied in University of Helsinki caught by plagiarized the thesis this year, and he copy-pasted most of the part of his thesis. From another point, could you guarantee there are no cheaters in your own country?
As a Chinese student studying in Helsinki School of Economics, we are admitted by SAT scores. The SAT test includes Math, Reading and Writing. There are also some Finnish students and other international students admitted from this track, and they acted as fools in math class. Does it mean these Finnish students and other international students also cheated in their entrance exams? Please keep your mouth shut if you don't know anything well, because you sounds like an idiot by said those words.

I understand that Salli is just describing her experiences.Tiffany wrote: Hey, as a Chinese I want you to apologize to us.
No reason to apologies for that.
