Fire Inspection

We got a notice that the fire department will come and inspect the homes in our area and we should be home at a certain time of the day. Anyone know what they typically check or what the inspection is about? We have smoke detectors, a carbon monoxide detector, fire extinguishers etc. I assume they are checking that the house has stuff like that?

Hank got a severe bolocking because he had boxes full of combustable rubbish (his old clothes) stacked up in the spare room.

They check for fire safety in general. They look for the things you must have (smoke detectors, unblocked escape route etc.) And if you have done some illegal electric wiring. But in most cases it will come down to the special interest of the inspector.

The electric wiring was pretty much done when we bought the house. What is illegal electric wiring?

and what happens if you can't be home during the time they requested? Is it a mandatory inspection?

What is illegal electric wiring?

Things that you installed yourself, without the ok of a licensed electrician.

They probably give you a new time after some struggling.

They came and just looked for smoke detectors and checked out the sauna chimney. They also checked the date on the fire extinguishers. The whole thing lasted just a few minutes, they gave me a paper and were on their way.

In a rental situation, who is responsible for the provision and upkeep of smoke detectors and fire extinguishers?

Additionally, we have a fireplace that gets used about 10-20 times a year, and the chimbly hasn't been swept in 4 years. Is it time for another?

Ours gets visited automagically every year. No need to book. The local sweep comes round our district and does them all. I thought it was obligatory to have it done every year.

Generally, its good for the Chimney to get it done every 6 months..After a couple of years, its difficult to remove the soot..so if it is more than a couple of years...its good to call them in..
