A little question

Post by Scotty » Wed Nov 14, 2007 6:02 am

Hello, everyone! I am new here; although I do not speak any bit of Finnish (but I am learning Hungarian, which of course is no good for Finland!), I've had a little love affair with her lately, through various stories my Finnish friend has told me and from what I've read.

Anyway....He told me about an artist named Antti Asplund, who he once met; since then, I've looked at his work online (he is a fashion designer) and love it.

Is Mr. Asplund very popular in Finland? My artistically-inclined self always tries to research the art scene in various countries; what are the majority of artists in Finland (painters, writers, designers, &c.)? And what is the mondern-day "art scene" like?

Thank you very much!

No, I had to Google to find out who he is. But he is just 25 years old, not enough time to become very popular.

Oh, my, how romantic!

Haha, just kidding. Shame, though!

And thank you, both of you. But remember: Finland could do with more fashion designers!

While I normally would support the creative use of synthetic fibres.... :P

I just find it...well, not good (for lack of a better word) that no Finnish designer has shown in Paris or any other fashion capital (to the best of my knowledge).

Found those art unis, dear Finns!

Oh! Ivana Helsinki!!

Bit bland for me, but all power to her and Finnish designers!

By the way....

America's Project Runway premiered Wednesday!!! Oooooooooh I love it so much. It's like caffeine pills, you can't stop watching it.

There is an interview in Six Degrees this month. She had a great show in Paris and has been really busy since. I think she is doing some designs for one of the big stores (Lafayette???) for their Christmas windows...

And Marimekko is quite well known in France (at least in Paris) I regularly send stuff to my god-daughter, she loves it. I love Ritva Liisa Pohjalainen's designs, not sure if any of it is exported though. There was a brilliant exhibition of her evening gowns at the Designmuseo a couple of years ago.

I think Finnish photography is quite well recognised (aka "the Finnish School") and Finland is well represented in contemporary music composition and conducting. Architecture. Furniture design. etc

So do I. And Andiata. Those are clothes that one can actually wear.

there really is no fashion scene in finland

Post by Kolliflauer » Thu Nov 22, 2007 6:30 pm

the really good Finnish designers are the graphic, industrial, textile print and architectural designers. Finns are among the best in the world, in those fields imo.

fashion is a completely different ballgame. while there are some moderately renowned fashion designers, they are all very safe and non-risque and have a customer base made of upper class older women.

"younger" designers tend to be quirkier and have a much more developed sense of original style, although i have to say most clothes i've seen by for example Paola Suhonen focus more on fabric print than creating something completely new - which goes back to my original statement of good finnish designers being better at printing.

and then there's the over-using of the scandinavian minimalist attitude.. that everything beautiful has to be very very simple. Or everything very very simple is beautiful. so most high fashion is either very simple and sophisticated (think andiata, ril's) or then quirky with great prints but nothing original otherwise (ivanahelsinki).

there's no john galliano or jean paul gaultier of finland. at least yet =)

there are a few designers into recycled textiles/fashion, can't remember names etc but they are on Uudenmaankatu as well. And their stuff is very "different".

But yes I agree (apart from the "older women" thing  ) it is a bit boring in the sense that it is tame and I have always found it mildly frustrating that some of those fab prints are not put to better use  But they are still fab prints.

Hope H&M doesn't massacre Marimekko's retro prints... hmmmm! :(
