American football on TV at a sports bar on Thanksgiving?

Post by texaslonghorn » Mon Nov 19, 2007 12:27 pm

Hello, I am traveling around Northern Europe for a month and it happens that I will be in Helsinki during Thanksgiving this week. Normally I spend Thanksgiving with my family and watch the Dallas Cowboys traditional Thanksgiving day game and then watch the Texas Longhorns play their traditional day-after-Thanksgiving-game against the hated Texas A&M Aggies. As I will be alone in Helsinki this Thanksgiving, I am trying to salvage a bit of the family tradition and ward off some of my homesickness by finding a sports bar or restaurant that plays American football games and, if I am really lucky, a place that serves an American style Thanksgiving meal (Turkey, ham, stuffing, mashed potatoes, mmmm). In any case, I came across this forum while searching for such a place so I would be very grateful for any helpful input, even if it is just to inform me that such a place does not exist. Thanks

Your main problem is the time difference between Helsinki and Dalas..
Assuming the match is at 15.00 Dalas time that is middle of the night in Helsinki..Sports bars are closed.

Regarding food....My guess is that one of the American owned hotels will do a traditional spread...Hilton....

People do not become more irritable as they grow old - they simply stop making the effort to avoid annoying others.

As I just watched the Giants game and the Cowboys game last night on TV, I thought I could chime in.

NFL games here are shown exclusively by http://www.viasat.fi and their sports channels. Most sports bars have Viasat sports available, however due to low(er) popularity of NFL compared to hockey, soccer etc, so it might try some convincing to get the bars to switch on the NFL. Viasat sports shows about 3-4 selected games a week, and they do come late at night, however some of the games are replayed the next day at a bit more decent times. You might give places like:

http://www.sportsacademy.fi
http://www.elmobaari.com

a try. No turkey, gravy or mashed potatoes available there thou...

Now the college football game is a bit trickier, since it's even less popular in Finland than NFL. However there's a channel that does show it, http://www.nasn.com . Now that channel is widely available, but don't know how eager the bar people are willing to put it on, but give it a try.

Hope this helps...
Get in there...

Last nite the Boyz thrashed the Skins (not the giants, that was last week) after a bad 1st half...
The Thanksgiving game is the jets are visiting Dallas and game starts at 4:15EST meaning 11:15PM helsinki time.
Sportsacademy will be crowded with sports drunks as there is an ice hocky game at 18:30.. mebbe if you tip enough, the staff might setup a tv for NFL...
As for Thanksgiving Dinner... Just be satisfied with Mashed potatoes and imagine the rest.. Generally a steakhouse will be your best bet to find some good steak and mashed potatoes..and Turkey: hmm Isnt that a country?
as for the longhorns, Good luck next year... Mebbe the Sooners ( if not the Aggies) might get em!!

OTOH, if you are with a laptop and a "Free" Hotel's WLAN connection, then you might get luckier if you visit the all new
http://www.myp2p.eu/
Which has information about free players and schedule on which sports is broadcasted when and using which player..

Looks like the Cowboys game will be on 11.15pm on Viasat Sports 1 on Thursday. Still a very manageable time to go see it in bar some place.

https://www.facebook.com/events/927226424028940/ The B-Side and B-Smokery @ Teurastamo will be having an American style thanksgiving and airing football. They also have a decent bourbon and rye list, which you don't often see in Helsinki. Usually its just scotch, etc. Maybe I'll see you there.
