Getting Ebay Germany items to Finland: Any thoughts?

Post by Cod » Fri Dec 21, 2007 9:47 pm

Has anyone had any experience getting a German courier firm to collect Ebay items in Germany and get them sent/delivered to Finland?

Basically the Seller doesn't want to organise it, but I figure there must be companies like Parcel2go in UK which seem happy to do that kind of thing.

Taa folks in advance! :D

Why didn't you ask before buying? Small items come as 'päkchen' cheap... up to 2 kilos at 16 euros with DeutschePost/DHL. Unless they use that one bastard service that doesn't deliver up here.

Parcel2go puts a few of them together here

Doesn't the seller have the delivery options listed?

Or is it you won't negotiate with the wicked Germans? Usually they have "lieferung" and there it says if they use and what courier. If they just give "Deutschland" it is polite to ask beforehand if you may bid - the DP/DHL/päkchen is usually the 16-17 instead of the Deutschland 5,60... Usually they will deliver - except a few companies that use that one arsewipe courier - but they're more concerned of "stupid foreigners" whining over the postage fees as they promise such economic domestic rates. School forcing me to study German has been paying itself back in the past years. Emails written with a familiar language alleviate the xenophobia... especially if you pay with überweisung, though they've taken more to PayPal recently.

they do but often Finland isn't an option, so I'm hoping to suggest that if they can simply pack it , I'll organise pick-up myself.

I always write using Google Translate..its sees to work ok, I just repeat the question in different ways in the same email in case it didn't translate correctly the first time round.

I tend to avoid saying things like
'Do you reckon I can swing by with the parcel van and pick up the booty myself'

which translates to

Sie rechnen kann ich mit Schwung durch das Paket abholen und van der Beute selbst

Which I am may or may not make sense. :D

And *why* would you do that? If they say in 'lieferung' Weltweit or Europäische Union then just expect a post delivery, if it says "Deutschland" than you just send them a letter asking if it is OK to bid from Finland. Usually its Deutsche Post so its the bloody same trip to the post office in any case.

..just got an email from a seller, I think his point is that he doesn't know how much the postage will be till he gets to the post office. At the point that he then posts to Finland, which he doesn't know the cost of till he gets there, he is out of pocket since I havn't paid him for the postage (since nobody knew how much it would be)

I think the way around this is to get a seperate billing account for postage so that the seller doesn't need to fret. That takes it back to the expensive couriers. :?

..popular guy, answering my own posts.

So in case anyone ever needs to know, heres the price list for posting from Germany, so you can send any item within 120x60x60 up to 30kg for around 41 euro, so it seems.

Thats pretty cheap, considering things on Ebay in Germany sometimes go for a song.

heres the price list

Yes, as long as you know the weight and dimensions the DHL has an online calculator - theres a few options, but it isn't anything resembling higher mathematics.

I've gotten stuff from clothing to cameras and radios to car parts delivered, so yeah, I agree its worthwhile sometimes.

I've done it quite a few times, without any problems. But it's up to the sellers decision if he wants to ship his items to Finland or not. If the seller says "Lieferung nach Deutschland" or anything similar that does not include Finland, too bad, I'm not going to bid. Except for some items I really want, then I can use the address of my buddy in Germany who then forwards it too me.

Interestingly, a couple of years ago I was not able to place a bid if the seller did not indicate that he is willing to ship to Finland. Then I complained to eBay that they should change it, as although I live in Finland, I can provide an address in Germany. After that, bidding became possible also on those items that could be shipped to Germany only.

I always ask first. Usually they're flabbergasted someone in Finland would be interested. Only time I had trouble is was with one using a courier service that only does "continental central europe"... so I provided my sister's address in France ;)

Usually if its electronics or stuff they're gotten enough of scam artists.

The Ebay.de seller got cold feet and pulled the plug.

I need to crack the 'pick-up' courier thing since then Ebay sellers don't actually have to do a thing except be home (which also is a pain but still do-able)
