I was in Turku today and saw some Häagen Dazs in Stockmann. They had an oreo cookie type flavor (can't remember the name) that looked sooooo good. I would have gotten some but would have had to have eaten the whole pint by myself since I couldn't take it home with me to Rauma. boo hoo
But maybe if there are other oreo cookie ice cream lovers then at least you can enjoy it!! I bet they have it in the Helsinki and Tampere Stockmann stores too.

That is probably the cookies and cream flavour. It is nice... However not as nice as the Ingman's "totally black" salmiakki icecream
I noticed that there is a local lady - raumagirl! How do you find Rauma?

I found Rauma via my "Rauma" man. We met in the US while he was studying and then moved to Helsinki for a while. He got a job here and then I eventually moved my work here too. Been here now in Rauma for around 7 years!
So you live in the area too? How did you find Rauma?

Well sort of - I was born & bred in the village of Eurajoki nearby (you know, the lot with the nuclear power plant and six-toed cats

). I have a British husband and we tend to visit Finland quite often although we currently live in UK. We have been toying up with the idea of moving to Finland in five years time and it would be nice (specially for him) to know english speakers.
I have been following this forum for some time and I must admit it has really opened my eyes to what people who do not speak Finnish go through whilst trying to establish themselves in Finland. I suppose one always wants to believe the best of their mother country and can have some hard time in accepting that what to me is a paradise can be a living hell to somebody else... How did you find it? Did you speak Finnish already when you moved to Rauma?
I quite like Rauma - however I am not so sure about that new Prisma. It is HUGE! I absolutely love the archipelago, and it has been far too long since I had the chance to go there

Nice you are from Eurajoki and of course I know it quite well.

I think there is one British man living there even... Did you have any culture shock when moving to the UK?
When I moved from Helsinki it was an adjustment because Rauma is quite a bit smaller & I had a really active social life. I had to meet new people and start everything all over again. People here are also a bit more reserved too so it somehow took a bit longer to meet people and make friends than in Helsinki. But I started a playgroup and met people through work, activities etc. Anyway, I think it's a nice town, wonderful in the summer and nice for raising a family. I like my work too so we are happy here.
As for Finnish, I could speak a little when we moved but as soon as I could I took an intensive Finnish course. Now my Finnish is much better (although not perfect by any means) and it has made my life here much easier. It is possible to get work if you don't speak Finnish but the opportunties are very, very limited without it. Most foreigners I know here are unemployed unless they have been brought for the Olkiluoto project or speak fluent Finnish. It also helps if you have some contacts.
If you are in town please feel free to PM me if you want to chat with an English speaker. It's always fun to meet new people.
