Current Situation, help please :S

Post by Jotunheim » Sun Dec 30, 2007 6:36 am

Firstly, really good, helpful forum, glad i joined =]

Secondly, excuse me not using the true "a" with accents and what have you above them, as i can't find them on my keyboard :P

Okay my query:

Currently I'm 17 (18 in January) and have a HUGE interest in everything Finnish, my friends call me a "Finnophile" and i guess that's what i am =/

I'm hoping one day i can move to Finland, specifically Vantaa, or anywhere near to Helsinki.

I left school with 10 GCSE's and all that, they were pretty decent, however, i only went on to get a further 2 AS levels.. (AS = Half of an A level)

so i was just wondering, how hard would it be for someone like me to find a job over there? I would literally work anywhere, as long as it could keep me with a roof over my head (Preferably a flat) etc. Even cleaning Mcdonalds =/

I'm currently saving money just for flat rent, and I'm hoping to be moving across in around 3 years? I also have a very basic understanding of Finnish, yet i'm constantly learning more and more..

Any advice would be very much appreciated, i look forward to seeing some replies =]

~ Ash

Very hard indeed.
What Finnish employers look for is:
- Job experience
- (Finnish) education or degrees
- Finnish language
- Finnish habits
With your profile you're in competition with Finnish high school kids who also have difficulties to find a job.
For more information search the forum, there are plenty of topics about jobs.

Agree with Rinso, AFAIK there is no shortage of poorly qualified 18 year olds in any EU country.

That's not to say you would not be able to cut it over here, some kid posted on here a few times this year, he is trying to put himself through Finnish high school :? Perhaps someone else remembers that poster's name?

My advice, as you already intend to save (wait) for 3 years ... go back to school, for a year... get enough A-level points to go to Uni and do a degree. In 4 years time you will have the basic tools for survival here ... and give yourself a much better shot at making a go of it over here. You might even be able to spend part of a degree in Finland ...

Plus, 3 years at Uni in the UK will be just as interesting (if not more so) as moving to Finland.

Huh?

You mean habits like staring, not holding the door for people in public places (ie not workplace), drinking, world champion snot rocketeers, coffee in overdose proportions, closing shop at five minutes before closing time?

What habits are employers looking for?

I guess many times this depends of the area of work. E.g in many software companies the official language is english. Perhaps this is not your area of expertice but there are always possibilities.

Things like doing your job and not bothering others with unnecessary chatter.

Have you ever seen Vantaa? What draws you there, of all places?
