Firewood (Oak)

Post by network_engineer » Wed Jan 09, 2008 11:32 pm

Hi all,

Haven't seen advertisements for oak firewood in the local newspapers. Is oak even available here? Does anybody have an idea how it compares (in terms of price) with e.g. birch etc?

And if these are available, any idea from where I can order them?

Kind regards.

 oak  you want to burn mahogany or sandalwood next?

... egyptian mummies I hear are pretty cheap and available from the Western Desert.

Why?

Birch makes great firewood, it's quite dense 'cause it grows slowly up here.

Anyway, nobody burns oak in Finland and they only grow in a very narrow strip of land across the south of the country
(Turku, via Hanko, Tammisaari, across to Porvoo and Kotka)

And if you don't mind dealing with some extra cleaning you can use other local trees as firewood as well. Even preferable if you use wood to heat the house since getting those birch logs can occasionally be bit of a problem or just expensive.

Family owns old farm back in the sticks. Big wood burning oven and... Well, what it is in english... Hella.

Both burn pretty much everything that grows into sufficient size outside. Of course birch might burn slightly more "clean" but you have to have your fireplaces checked and cleaned regularily anyway and this far we have failed to notice any ill effects when cooking (well made fireplaces burn hot enough and with enough air current to keep the oven clean).

Thanks.

Oh, and for the record, with extra cleaning I meant that trees like pine and such tend to cause little extra litter on floor.

Hi all,

No, I wouldn't want to burn sandalwood :D

Oak tends to burn much slower and thus longer and thus consumes less wood! But okay, I get the idea. No oak!

We are currently using birch! Which reminds me, can anybody recommend some cheap(er) woodcutter. The guy 30 Kms away wanted 250 EUR per tree  (I agree the trees are rather tall, i.e. if I do it myself, I'll get my house and my neighbour's house and his neighbour's house too) ; however, with five trees, I'd rather buy wood in the open market. :?

Cheers.

I ll ask ma SO to see If we still have the tel. no of the person we used. He charges €200 for 2 trees ( or quoted €180 cash to avoid alv)..
and he works around Lohja/Inkoo/Kirkkonummi area..But you can try to see if he ll come to your place..

I had a 70 yo birch (over 3000 kg) cut down for 40€ :D
But then again this is nowheremäki and there are plenty of people who can do it.

Hi!

rinso: So, how far is your nowheremäki from Nurmijärvi? I am nowhere close to the centre of the Universe either, but in my case, the village has less than four people doing tall trees. If anywhere close to Nurmijärvi, then please, PM me the name of the person.

Kind regards.

Added later: PS: This was supposed to go as a PM, but can't seem to delete the post.

Far. East of Kuopio, so more than 400 km. Sorry, can't help you.

For 250 euros, you can buy your own chainsaw and do it yourself. Just don't let the tree fall on your house, car, dog, etc. :D

Don't settle to chainsaw. Get some other gear too... "Vänkäri" or "kaatorauta" would be one.

Else tree will hit your house, bounce on your car and end up crushing your dog.

:D

Thanks for the advice guys!!!

As I said in one of my earlier posts, if I do these particular trees myself, these trees will get their revenge by getting my house (and car), my neighbours house and my neighbour's neighbours house. My dog on the other hand, will be right beside me, smirking at my tree-cutting skills. :D

Cheers.
