Question about Pay & Taxes.

Post by crunchy » Mon Mar 03, 2008 11:00 pm

I hope someone of you can help me, as this is very urgent..

I was offered a job as a nanny in Espoo. My pay would be 500 euros
before taxes and I would have to pay the monthly bus ticket in Espoo area +
language course. Accommodation + food would be free.

How much money would I app. have left after all those?

Is the 500 per month?
It depends on your tax percentage.
If this 500 per month is your only income, your tax percentage would probably be what? under 10%?
Monthy bus ticket in Espoo area is about 45 euros for non-student. Language course depends on where you're doing the course.

There are so many variables in your equasion that it's very hard to say.

Mhm thank you.
Yeah, it would be my only income and I would be a non-student also. ;)
Actually, I am not so convinced about working for this family, but if the pay would be good in the end after all, I would consider, you know. .. .

Accomodation and food is taxable but there might be special rules for au-pairs....

try browsing on http://www.vero.fi

If you take one of the language courses offered by Espoo municipality then they cost about 50€ for 20-22 lessons (ie 40 hours).
http://www.espoo.fi/default.asp?path=1; ... 1832;41701
then open the pdf file "kielet ja kulttuurit"

If you prefer to take the university courses in Helsinki then they are more expensive.

Haha, I won't tell any names here in public. :P
It's a mother (I have not heard yet anything of a father..) with 3 children, who wants someone who gets along well with the kids, but lives his/her own life besides that. She clearly said, that the person she will employ shall be able to have an own life and not be wishing for taking part in a family life, because she has a lot of work and does not need a 4th kid.
Well.. sounded a bit mhmm cold to me. Very cold actually.

Depends. Finnish or foreign born mother?
I think she might have meant she wants someone who takes care of herself so mother does not need to be looking after nanny as well. Picking up stuff and so forth.

Though it can also mean that you are not wanted in family dinner. If there is such things anymore.

Well, I hope she has explained the situation to her darling children because they are the first ones who will be confused if you are forced into an ambivalent situation such as that. OTOH it could just be "lost in translation". Probably a 5 minute chat on the phone will either reassure you or frighten you away forever and trusting your own instincts is usually The Way To Go.

My guess, she is one of those Burberry mums who has a daytime job doing something important (maybe with local government) and spends all her evenings "networking", husband probably "travels" all week. Be prepared to work over-time. Just guessing

Yeah, yeah. I actually think so too. I have spent a year already in Helsinki, working as a nanny for a family where I wasn't treated too well. I was more of a cleaning girl there.. being called whenever the cat barfed somewhere, having to clean behind the toilet on my knees, while host mother was watching me and alike. I was yelled at a lot. On the other hand they expected me to join family "fun", also dinners and stuff, but at some point I decided to just go my way there after work. I had a blast of a year besides the work, but job and living situation was very depressing.
I do want to move to Finland. I am working in band booking & promotion, having just grounded my own agency, and I would love to build all that more up in Finland. I know many people there, also lots who want to work together with me in that field. The thing is, that it will take some years still until I can eventually live from my agency, if ever. Until then I have to work asides, to earn my living. As I am having the common language problem (I know good basics, but am far from fluent), I was lately thinking about doing another AuPair year as starters, doing more Finnish courses and so on and also using the year to apply for many, many other jobs (like McDonald's etc. :P ). It would mean a bit less time for the agency, but I have people who could help me out during that time, so it should not be too much of a problem.
Now this was the first AuPair offer I got and of course I was happy about it and considered it right away, but really thinking about it and listening to my heart/ intuition, I think I should keep on searching for another one. It's not that I want to be a real part of the family I work for, somehow I think that's not possible when working for them and earning money for spending time with them, but I at least would like to feel a bit more wanted and appreciated. It's too tough for me, to take it again the other way round, I think.

Hei, thank you all a lot for your answers to me on that!! :)

Maybe you should consider working as an au pair in the United States.

I know a few families in the U.S. who have au pairs, and all are treated like royalty.
