Motorcyling Finland

Post by Mikie » Fri Mar 21, 2008 12:27 am

Didn't want to hijack the motorcycle insurance thread, so I figured I'd start this one. Was just curious who's riding here and who's up for some tours this summer?

I'm flying back down to Madrid on the 8th of April where my BMW R1150R is waiting patiently for me. I started an across Europe ride in December, and now from Madrid I'll be riding down along the coast, through most of the Alps and then up through the Baltics before hopping on Tallink into Helsinki in June. Once I arrive in Hel, I'll be cruising around most of the summer, with possibly a Norway/Sweden/Lapland run in July. Anybody up for doing some riding this summer, let me know.

Oh, and I'm also looking for a place to pick up a decent, yet affordable helmet for my other half. Full face. Haven't looked around yet for any good places to pick something like this up.

I'm up for a few rides. I plan to get mine on the road this summer, just got to sling the engine in the frame and sort out a numberplate for it.

Not sure on the helmet. I always get everything from ebay

Which eBay do you use? I haven't seen an eBay.fi and shipping from the US or UK I'm worried might make it too expensive to be worth it.

What kind of bike you building?

Mike:

http://www.allright.fi/EN/index2.html is usally reasonably priced and carries all the major brands of helmet - Arai, Shoei, etc.. Depending upon what kind of full face helmet you are looking for the price will vary.

We have a 2003 Black Widow (VT 750) ourselves and recently did a full 3 week tour last summer (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Czech Republic, Germany, Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden and back to Finland)...it was a great trip aside from at some points feeling like I was driving through a swimming pool and never thinking I would be dry agian ;)

I can not WAIT for it to warm just a tad so that I can start driving again. Last year's driving season was almost a full 7 months - April to the End of October..I was in heaven....

Thanks for the link. I'll have to check that place out. Mainly was just looking for a weekend helmet for Maria, she won't be doing any long hauls with me.

Well once I get my bike back here in Hel, we should get the bikes out. I have been amazed at the numbers of bikes out already, even with all the sand/gravel on the roads still. Spring is in the air!

One thing I was concerned about though, was parking for the bikes here. In almost all of western Europe, parking motorbikes is acceptable on sidewalks and areas of the street where parking a car is not allowed, but theres room for a bike.

Here in Finland, I don't see that. All bikes so far have been parked on the streets in normal parking spots. Are they susceptible to the same parking fines/fees as a car parked in a regular car spot? Is there any leniency for bikes?

On my street here in Töölö, the sidewalk is almost 4 meters wide. Theres plenty of room to park a bike up against a wall of the buildings or there is a brick meter wide near the car parking where the trees and signs are that has room to park a bike out of the way. What would happen to a bike parked in these areas? Towed? Ticketed? Both?

Just trying to plan out my summer parking schedule. I won't be able to get a street parking pass for the bike as the registration (NY) won't match my Töölö address. So I need to find a way where I won't be getting ticketed daily or won't need to run out and feed the meter (parking payment box) constantly.
