Incredibly hot chili

Post by sammy » Thu Mar 27, 2008 11:37 am

For all you hot spice addicts - today's Helsingin Sanomat sports a page-long article about the hottest chili in the world - Bhut jolokia. If you're subscribing to the HS digilehti I think the article can also be found there.

Paprika: 0 SHU (Scoville Heat Units)
Tabasco: 2 500 - 5 000 SHU
Jalapeño: 2 500 - 8 000 SHU
Aji Cristal / Cayenne: 30 000 - 50 000 SHU
Habanero Scotch Bonnet: 100 000 - 325 000 SHU
Habanero Red Savina: 350 000 - 577 000 SHU
Bhut Jolokia: 1 001 304 SHU

Crikey!

Was this the one developed in southern England? The chilli that if you put half of one in a family curry it will make it inedible? Someone was saying that with these really hot chilis, you just touch it on the food, and that gives more than enough "heat"
Political correctness is the belief that it's possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

There does seem to exist some kind of a Dorset variety  - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naga_Jolokia - but the Bhut chili described in the HS article seems to come from India - and seems to be hotter than the Dorset lab one.

Pretty strong stuff nevertheless... but Raamv would probably just sprinkle some Tabasco on them

Great quote from wikipedia, as usual:
It is used as a cure for stomach ailments.
Well duh, cuz it eats a hole through your stomach and kills ya! :D

Perhaps it works if you use it in "homeopatic" amounts (ie you take a pill that is prescribed to you by a doctor who has a parrot whose ex-owner's son used to date someone who had heard from her cousin that their neighbour once saw a Bhut jolokia plant from a distance...)

Sounds more like it should be homeopathetic amounts ;)

One of the main reasons to develop this kind of Chili ( as it is inexpensive to cultivate them) is to make invisible "animal" fences to fend of Tigers and elephants.
Recently in the Notrtheastern states, there has been a spate of Stampedes by wild Elephants..so it does work on them.
This chilli is more for other purpose than consumption!! nevertheless!!
