Finland and the arts

Post by cris_chinatown » Fri Apr 04, 2008 4:21 am

Hi,

just thought i would post on this forum to ask anyone if they have any knowledge on what kind of work is available to people seeking a career in make-up artistry for televison and special effects in Finland. I'm looking at other countries also, just figured i would ask about this industry and any advice you could give would be greatly appriciated.

yes, i wont. I noticed quite a bit of arrogance from a few people on this forum which is a shame.

With all the whopping four tv channels, unless you count in the gonzo-journalism the nose powdering isn't a huge profession. Some like YLE2 or MTV3 had big studios and made a lot of productions but they're competing very hard these days. They do bigger movie productions every now and then, but as the budgets are tight there isn't a huge FX industry (and not much training, so if you are good...). Of course it is a very niche job environment, so basically you need to know someone to get "in" the scene and get your portfolio around, after all it isn't anything that you learn from books. And after that its all peaches and cream as always.
Cheers, Hank W.

... the nose powdering, very flattering for a way to describe my profession...

Did you come here to be flattered or get an answer to your question? Maybe you should have studied for a real job.

SO you have a real job that is not your profession ? strange..
The Finnish TV and Film Industry is ever more closed than other industries. you need to have inside contacts who are able to make things happen ( as in having the ability to recommend you to someone or some studio that will then take a long time to hire you. Since the number of those professionals are very very limited, it takes a long time and effort to get into that industry).

Chris, this is Finland.

It has very small theater/movie industry with little money. But lots and lots of idiots (mostly finnish natives) who feel that they are somehow artistic. Either because they got this stupid feel of having talent for it from some hippie genome or because they are highly boheme and do not want to do real job requiring work.

So, as result our theater schools, lines for XXXX design and whatnot are loaded. There simply isn't lack of people willing to slap some makeup on actors, or willing to have makeup slapped on them. Unless you are some kind of uberjesus of makeup artistry, there is most likely no job for you.

Either head to Hollywood or Bollywood for such jobs.

Now that is a good suggestion as these days, the in thing is to have personal foreign make-up artists!

Well, I honestly doubt we need all these performers Teatterikorkeakoulu produces.

Or all the attention given to them.

Then again, at least they are not taping how they kill cats or try to pass child pornography as art.

Anyway, bottom line. We got excess of theater/art/makeup/movies people. But not enough people interested in their products to employ them all as it is.

I am really starting to have my doubts about Finland... i thought in the beginning that it was such a prosperous country with opportunities for every one distinguishing no race, profession, hobbies, beliefs, social level, education opportunities, without any discrimination etc. in other words a first world country but some people in here almost convinced me that is not at all like that, every time some ask if there's any chance to land a job (and im talking legal jobs cuz i know some people will throw at my face that im an illegal "human being") tiwaz, hank and other people manage to let every one know that there is no chance that there are no jobs opennings to not even try it or else Finns either will make you feel small or in my case kick you out of their country like a dog, i mean i know that there are rules and restrictions and also a system but that's nothing close to the first world countries that i know it's just not, but again this is just my very personal thought and plus this is just what a couple of people say (tiwaz, hank) like if you were all that and a bag of chips... jajaja  anyway i still think Finland is a great country and that ass@$**% like some one in here are minority in this great country!!! :D
