Intentionally failing an UAS entrance exam

Post by wildclaw » Sun Apr 06, 2008 11:30 pm

Hi everyone,

I applied to some finnish UAS and I'm going to take part in the entrance exams in the next weeks. The problem is that I heard about these schools and made my registration just few days before the application period ended, and I didn't considered carefully enough my preferences ... (yes, one always has excuses to justify such stupid action  :ochesey: ). I'm extremely motivated by my 2nd, 3rd and 4th choices (engineering programmes) but less and less by the 1st one (management).

So I'm thinking of intentionally failing the entrance exam of my 1st choice programme, in order to be selected to my 2nd, 3rd or 4th choice programme. (Because, like you probably know, if I get accepted to my 1st preference programme, my applications for my 2nd, 3rd or 4th preferences will be cancelled and I won't have the possibility to get accepted into any of them :ohno: ).

The question is, how to do to fail this exam?

- Go to the exam place and tell the person responsible for the test registrations about the situation, and ask to be marked as absent/failed/whatever. But in that case, is there's any risk for my 3 other applications? (cancellation, negative feedback ...)

- Pass the exam and intentionally fail some part like the interview or the 2nd language test (even though it's my mother thongue  ). That seems to be a safest solution, but I feel sorry for people who will waste their time interviewing me or correcting the !"#¤% I'll have written on my sheet ...

I'm a bit hesitant to contact the admissions office and ask about it. I'm afraid they would have some negative impression which could affect my application :| What do you think? Has anyone experienced that?

Thanks a lot!

wow ;) well, you´d better fail on written exam then. It´ll be abcd test so nothing easier to write a wrong answer :) anyhow it´s good that you think about the others during the interview 8) so what is your first choice?

My first choice is multilingual management assistant at Haaga-Helia. I got attracted by the multilingual aspect but I'm afraid I'm not made for management ...

If you have been invited also to the examinations of your "lower" options just skip the examination of the first option. You do not have to show up at the venue at all to be disqualified. It will not have any effect on your result or opportunities concerning the other examinations.

Well, "back in the day" that was 10 years ago when the "you need to apply and fail to get on the benefits" law was implemented they actually came in and asked "anyone here just to get a mark that they applied and failed and with no real interest" so they weeded out the "unmotivateds" out so as to save the time and money. Basically as you had to apply&fail for was it 3 schools back then the "application figures" were skewed as people'd apply for something they wouldn't get in even by mistake so the morre applicants there were the less likely you were to get in on "cancelled" seats. So I don't know if they ask that for the English programmes as those seem to have quite a lot of real competition.
Cheers, Hank W.
