Wanna quit my job, any ideas (again)???

Post by Johnny_Peebucks » Mon Apr 14, 2008 11:11 pm

Hi,

Yeah - you've read a million similiar posts. But I am seriously thinking of quitting my crappy TEFL job and doing something else. What kinda work can someone with a Literature degree and a TEFL cert. get into?

Any ideas? (and nothing to do with teaching, please :D )

Thanks

Are you salaried? Have you thought of going freelance? That way you can still get some money from teaching and look for a second job, parttime doing something else. Have you thought of looking for some tourist guide work in Turku during the summer. Turku probably runs courses to train guides (Helsinki does/used to). Or you could study (intensive Finnish, Russian, IT, plumbing, ????).

But it depends really on what you like doing... you're only on your 3rd post on here so how they hell can we tell what you might be good at or what to recommend!!! But a lit degree and a TEFL are really only good for teaching if you have no Finnish and no other skills, qualifications or experience.

By the way... why are you fed up with TEFL? (Just curious)

I just read your last post... you have a TMI. So you don't have to "quit" your job. You can just ramp down the teaching while you look for something else. I teach (I have an Oy) but I take 3 months off in the summer and do stuff that has no connection with teaching.

Been doing it since 1999...sick of the bad salary, bad conditions...love the teaching - hate the industry.

No, no other skills!!

That's the problem, I feel that I am so busy with the crappy job that I can't go and train for something else - unless I leave the country. But I have a partner here and those "ball and chains".

TMI and OY????

What else does a degree in literature qualify you for? Apart from teaching?

It might get you into a Masters programme in Librarianship I suppose? Is there one of those in Finland? I'm pretty sure librarians get crap salaries too.

Have you thought of writing articles as a freelancer for magazines and some internet sites..( initially extra income, and later on a Full time ?)
maybe something like this:

Check this one out! As an English Lit. Major, you should be able to shovel sh*t with the best of them.

Good man, I did Chemistry up the hill. Was back there last weekend, worshipped at Goodison and had dinner at the Shangi.

Seriously, you must have got the impression at poly that arts degrees are a bit of a dosser's choice and often only qualify you to teach the subject. Someone must have said that to you at some stage ... you either got to Uni to study what interests you (in which case I'd have read Archaeology or German) or you do something that'll get you a job.

If you want to earn more money, I'd say you're going to have to move away from what you studied, perhaps train in something a bit more applied.

Good luck... like.

€2000 is not so bad for horse trainer, especially this is very far from Helsinki. It should be very cheap real-estate in that area.

I went with the "do the thing you like option"...ok, I am kinda half fibbing...It was a case of do the only thing that I have a clue about. But any dumb @#$% can read a book and analyse it (minus engineers). And now I am really regretting it. :x

At least in England there are loads of careers that you can go into with any degree so long as they like the cut of your jib... e.g. accountancy as they'll train you up anyway. Or you could take an MBA. Dunno about those sort of possibilities here though. Word on the street here is that you need a relevant degree for whatever job you are intending to do.

Not sure it is quite so easy to get into accountancy these days. I don't think they are too interested in Horse Whispering graduates unless they have AT LEAST a 2:1  Even when I applied they were asking for upper second as a minimum and that was with a BA/BSc (hons) in Business. Might be wrong though.
