Or how about a good shop with a good meat selection with ok prices? Well OK prices might not be possible but any places with a good selection of different cuts of meats?

Yes, definitely Hakaniemen Halli butchers are the best. Or Stockmans - they have good cuts too. Also, there's a good Halal butcher at Leppavaara (spelling?) - they are really helpful, nice and we always get good meat from them. You can see it from the Ring - it's in a row of shops facing the Ring.

BBQ House in Kamppi, though not 100% consistent, has excellent steak. (For Finnish restaurant standards.) I was pleasantly surprised by everything. I would recommend a salad for the side dish though, the baked potato is filled with some kind of liquidy topping sauce, and the fries are a bit on the greasy side. Bread, wine, steak, fish, and veggie dishes are excellent, prices vary, but count on about 30 euro per person with wine and all. Also, brownie desert is quite delicious as well.

www.halalliha.fi (yes, they are really friendly and very good meat, excellent value for money)

www.reininliha.fi (Hakaniemi)

www.roslund.fi (Wanha Kauppahalli)

http://www.chef-wotkins.com/index.php?p=myymala (Sornainen, for the factory shop, fantastic selection)

Not sure about restaurants though, as I usually order fish, but have heard good reports about a Grilli in Pohjois Tapiola (Espoo) that has been there for years and all the locals rave about it. Never been there myself.

This place is really close to where I work and I have seen it and wondered how is it and what are the prices. I'll go check it out. Are the prices on the "Tarjoukset" page still the same? And its price per kilo right? I see that they have naudanrinta (Brisket) and T-Bone. Two things that I have been thinking of getting lately :)

I think it says those prices are valid through 2008.
We bought a huge quantity of prepared merguez sausage meat last time we went (maybe 6 kgs) and I think we got it cheaper than the advertised rate because we made the sausages ourselves (their machine was being repaired).
They also have a selection of North African and Middle Eastern condiments, tinned veg and pulses etc (similar to the Hameentie ethinic stores).
Getting to the place is a challenge.... no access from Keha I, even though the main door is on the ring road. You need to drive into a small shopping centre where there is a car park and then walk up a ramp.

That would be Grilli Toro: http://www.grillitoro.fi/

Ah, the memories. As a student I lived in Otaniemi, and didn´t eat properly every day. I was skinny as a skeleton. Then comes Sunday. It is windy, and there is lots of snow, and I struggle through wind and snow towards Tapiola, open Toro´s door, and the smell of steak drifts everywhere. The delicious wait, and then comes the plate so full of meat and fries (and a couple of leaves of lettuce) that the fries keep dropping to the table. It was always a feast.

And when we had a teenage son we often ate at Toro. It was the only place he got his stomach full. (Except home, where he ate the amount that the rest of us ate combined)

Toro has been voted The Best Steak Restaurant in Helsinki many years in a row. Of course it is not in Helsinki, but who cares.

I don´t know if it is still around, but at least there used to be another good steak place in Tapiola: Grilli Ribis. It was (or is) in Heikintori, at the back of the house in the 1st floor. A tiny place.

Santa Fe in the WTC do a deadly steak.
It's pretty hefty, too.

That's the place. It has a huge cult following in southern Espoo.... I have heard stories like yours several times: memorable family feasts, anniversaries etc.... Must try and get there some day. It is NOTHING special from the outside (but then again neither is the Gallow's Bird in Niittykumpu).

Haven't seen the other place you mentioned though near Heikintori.

It is nothing special from the inside either. The same tables and chairs that were there already 35 years ago. Only the steaks are special.

I'm fortunate to live near the Grilli Toro and walking my daughter home past it every day is torturous from the smell of really good grilled steak. It does indeed give you a LOT for what you pay for. I've never been able to finish a plate, even on the lunch menu. It's typically packed at lunchtime during the weekdays - be forewarned. But it's great when you're *really* hungry and it is run it like a small restaurant so it can be very friendly.

My husband likes Grilli Ribis in the Tapiola Heikintori. But you have to slog through a really foul smelling Indian Curry fast food shop to get to it.

Ah, so Grilli Ribis is still there! It is at least as old as Toro.
