Ahem, well, I might raise a hand here - but with a slight reservation; I wouldn't say I hate sports, for some reason I don't find it an interesting pastime for myself (I mean watching sports). To an extent I'm a bit jealous to the footie fans on this forum for example, they almost seem to have a language of their own (well, cricket fans surely do), and I do not doubt it for a second that for them it's a genuine interest and a genuine source of pleasure. But from a personal perspective... threads like "Jumpers for goalposts" might as well be written in Klingon. I just don't get it! :D

Me neither.

Watching sports on telly just bores me to death. I'd rather grab a good book.

Do you remember that doping scandal a few years back? It was all over the news, as if there weren't any real problems in the world! Come on people, who gives a !"#¤%!!! I don't!

And ice hockey, oh, that sacred thing... If there's an ice hockey match on TV and Finns are playing, I sometimes tell people that I support the other team - just to piss people off

I'm a blaspheming witch.

Nope, my wife certainly agrees with you.

Heh, I love that thread  i'm just grateful no-one's started a "Depressing Finnish rock music (with black eyeliner) thread" yet (Ed-Maybe call it Jumpers; because they're depressed. Ho Ho!)

Excellent.

One thing that really strikes me is the fact that many ice hockey players lack their front teeth. I mean, haven't they got enough money to get their teeth fixed?

The NHL players don't seem to have that problem

Yeah, they've got the money, but I don't think they do it anyway...

Yeah, that's just the thing - it's obvious, particularly in that thread, that people do like football a lot and gain genuine satisfaction from watching it... and it seems that "knowing" about the game, the teams, even single players and coaches, brings another level to the discussions... and of course it's not only the game itself, being a fan is a social thing as well I presume... now, I appreciate that - even though I can't see how I personally could share the interest. I have no idea why I never was bitten by the footie bug, but that doesn't mean I'd ever say "it's stupid to like sports". Because IMO it's not, well not at least any more stupid than liking Bartók.

Fair enough, elisouli !

Myself, I enjoy a fair few sports - either playing or watching. Yet some, for example motorsports, I'd rather slit my throat than watch. The again, I have no time for ski-jumping or golf. But if I sit still for just a bit too long or the channel isn't changed, then I'm hooked :x

As for the doping scandal, I feel ya - unfortunately priorities are all over the shop. There's more focus on some 60 year old sending a few horticultural-themed text messages than on, say, Burma, Darfur, Tibet, the Nato question (dear God...), Putin as PM, etcetera.. The most worrying part of the Kanerva saga was his taste in women...

They seem to appear on TV with a perfect set of pearls even after having been mutilated in a game the day before.
To your original question. I rather play sports than watch sports. What bothers me most about professional sports is the obscene salaries the athletes earn. Nobody is worth that much.

You're right about that - she certainly doesn't seem very bright... However, I also feel a bit sorry for that girl. She's been mocked everywhere, both in gossip magazines and in the internet. What people don't seem to notice is that this girl is obviously suffering from some mental condition: either histrionic or borderline personality disorder I'd say. And judging by her looks, she might also have an alcohol problem. Ok, she might be a bit stupid, but I really think that sick people should be left alone!

I don't hate sports in general but i don't have any time for the sports everyone seems to be into here.
All my workmates constantly talk about and follow soccer, ice hockey, salibandy and others that i have no interest in at all. I feel like a bit of an outsider at times but then again i'm not particularly social to begin with!
I do enjoy playing particular sports but my whole life doesn't revolve around any of them, unlike loads of people i know.
Seems like every week i get asked to change shifts with someone because they have a game/training or something else related to said sport.

:D Really had to comment on this one, as norwich said the hockey player's indeed do have an intact set of teeth before the games and maybe later after them... This is due to the fact that the player's have "nastahampaat" (thumbtackteeth? ) which they take off for the duration of the game. Hence, the nice smile of Ville Peltonen

Anyways, football sucks, hockey rules
