Broad beans

Post by luulio » Sat May 17, 2008 6:50 pm

Hi all,

Could somebody tell me what "broad beans" are in Finnish - and in which section should I search for them in the supermarket (ie fresh, canned, frozen?). Thanks!

Broad bean is härkäpapu.

I have bought them dried. There are different growers, here is one: http://www.lassilantila.fi/luomu4.html. Finnish broad beans are a little smaller than those grown more south.

In Helsinki Kauppatori there is a vegetable stand that sells every summer fresh organic broad beans (härkäpäpu). Fresh broadbeans are wonderful with some Italian pecorino cheese.

:D Thanks!!! I've looked for them but never found them. Shame they are not available frozen though, or even tinned. I love beans in soups and salads, or thrown in stews.
