14th June: Fiskars Folk Festival

Post by Rosamunda » Thu Jun 12, 2008 1:41 am

All day, free entry.

also some kind of Sommarfest in Billnäs (in between Karis/Karjaa and Fiskars just off route 111)

If the weather is sunny, could be a nice day out to combine the two and even stop off at Raseborg castle on the way home.

Thank you!

Forecast calls for extremely heavy rain Sunday night - but should be scattered light showers until then. Sounds good!

It was busy in the village today, so I think tomorrow will be crowded too. The coaches have started their whirlwind tours and a few foreigners have turned up (but most arrive during the "normal" European school holidays ie July/August).

I am stuck in HEL on a course + exam this weekend so won't be in Fiskars... but my kids are there... if you want to go and say hello

I was also in Ekenas today, it was quite lively and crowded and sunny. Nice place when the sun is shining.

Fiskars was lovely on Sunday. Not as many vendors outdoors as I had hoped, but certainly worth checking out some nice antique finds, if you're into such things. I also enjoyed the fresh cinnamon rolls and coffee. I'll be discovering Ingå tomorrow, the store Strand is my favorite and I highly recommend it. :D

It is a small "New England style" shopping mall that belongs to Marcus Gronholm (rally pilot) if I remember correctly. There is a hairdresser, a shop with soft furnishings and gifts "à la Gap" and a restaurant and a couple of other stores. The building is quite interesting (new) but the stores are nothing special (IMO).

If you go to Ingå make sure you visit Fagervik which has a magical feel to the place (off the beaten track). Unfortunately the church is PRIVATE and locked !!! But it is a nice walk UPHILL (!!!) to the lake and a lovely drive through the countryside on to Raseborg or Ekenäs, Billnäs, Mustiolinna and Fiskars etc

BTW.... if you are into the antiques thing.... visit the plant nursery in Billnäs... there is a VERY old barn with a nice (small but nice) selection of antiques inside the gardens. And in July, Billnäs has a BIG antiques fair (over 3 days) about the same time as the "posh" fair in Mustiolinna. During that week there are a TON of vendors in Fiskars too, maybe 20-30 stalls if the weather is good.

And the cafeteria by the ferry has the best fresh donuts I know!

I hope to make it to the antiques fair as well.

Inko also has a small home museum featuring several buildings 100-200 years old. There's also a small monument next to the home museum that has trenches from WW1 (part of the Helsinki fortification).
