Grilling on Juhannus? What?

Post by jas_rho » Mon Jun 16, 2008 11:19 am

Hey, I thought I'd ask what people are planning to toss on the Bar-B-Q during Juhannus? I have started a grilling blog as well so if you want to go vote and comment there feel free :D

 http://grillataan.blogspot.com/

I plan on a variety of things over the three days but haven't for sure decided on what exactly. I am thinking beer can chicken since I haven't had that in years and have never tried it myself. Then of course some nice steaks and probably a little makkara as well, can never go wrong with that!

 Now we see the power of Finnish language-- It makes you wanna kill either yourself or others; usually we foreigners would choose the latter.

You got it wrong. Finnish makes Finns kill themselves, and makes foreigners want to kill Finns. Maybe there is something to improve in the language in order to protect Finnish population. :?

Apparently, your coming to Finland is a wise choice in that regard, but I'm not sure whether it's a good thing or not in Finns' opinion. :P

Tomorrow I'll put seven different flowers under my pillow. Another option would be rolling naked on a meadow, but I think I'll go for the flowers.

No not Russians, actually the russian guy is a bit like me, same age roughly, smokes roll ups, quiet, and takes the opposite walking route to me in breaktimes, he doesn't speak english, I don't speak russian, so we get on quite well. The othe Russian is a 21 year old girl, who told me I was looking good a couple of weeks back, so obviously no problems there.

No I want to grill the people who make me feel I'm in päiväkoti, "Opettaja, opettaja, I know the answer..." "Opettaja Opettaja, can we have more kotitehtävä". Little sh*ts.

Reading posts about languge courses, I've noticed that various nationalities cause problems, shouldn't generalize, if a certain group (not mentioning nationality) talks to much I either glare at them or the tutor, usually works.

:D Was this about seeing your future husband in your dreams? My fondest memories of the Finnish summer is Juhannus and all the folklore that surrounds it. Elisouli, tell me more about it (I refuse to use the search button).

Littlefrank, your post made me laugh. Forget the course and concentrate on the immersion (aka life) around you! I hope your comment about the nationalities that talk too much is not about Americans (we can't help it  ).

Happy Juhannus to everybody!

Ah, juhannusyö is a magical night... Put seven (some people say nine) different flowers under your pillow at Midsummer night and you will see your future husband in your dream. Or look into a spring and you'll see his reflection there.

Then there are those rituals that include running naked somewhere, usually on a rye field, and you'll be given a glimpse of your SO-to-be.

http://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juhannustaika
Hmm... In the olden days, when girls used to perform those rituals, I'd think there definitely were plenty of potential sulhasia lurking around on the fields... Of course all the guys in a village were aware of those practices, they must have been. :D

Keep your eyes open in case there's a will-o'-wisp burning somewhere - there might be a treasure hidden underneath it! Hyvää jussia kaikille! :rose:

Thanks elisouli for the trip down the memory lane :D I will do my best to collect the seven herbs, but running around naked around here... I will leave it until my next trip to Finland!
Hyvää Jussia to you, too!

My stepfather told that girls swimming naked was first glimpse of woman body, and those girls knew there were boys watching. Theres nothing wrong to show your body or is it finnish think to not be ashamed of nakedness? :)
I remember vaguely when we had english quests and how hard it was for them to be naked in sauna (not even mixed sex, only boys).
I think swedish got something to talk when i and my sister ran around naked when rained, we were 3 and 5 yrs or like that but running happened on area where are only apartment buildings :)
Best what i remember is nurse who told to shy guy that she has seen many before and theres nothing special or nothing to shame if she see his "private parts".
So  for running around naked :D
